KANNAPOLIS, N.C. -- A father was arrested and is charged with simple assault after he rushed and tackled a high school student-athlete during a wrestling match, according to a Kannapolis Police Department news release.

Barry Lee Jones, of Harrisburg, was arrested on Saturday at 415 East 1st St.

He is charged with simple assault and disorderly conduct.

The student-athlete he tackled was from Southeast Guilford High School and was wrestling Jones' son, who is a student from Hickory Ridge High School, the release says.

Jones was processed at the Cabarrus County Jail and received a $1,000 secured bond.

The SGHS student-athlete was reportedly not injured.

The expert on the mat at the time of the incident gave the hand signals to call the SGHS student athlete's move as illegal, according to the North Carolina High School Athletic Association.

The Southeast Guilford High School wrestling coach and principal declined to comment.

FOX8 has reached out to Guilford County Schools.

The expert on the mat at the time of the incident

I wrestled for 13 years and never heard that term. We called them “referees”. Wonder if that’s changed.

That kid had to have been so embarrassed.

Mat Expert: "Son, that's an illegal move. You will now be tackled by the father of your opponent."

SGHS student-athlete: "Well, I suppose that's only fair. It was an illegal move."

Police Officer: "Well, Mr. Jones, tackling a minor is also an illegal move, so you will be arrested."

Barry Lee Jones: "Well, that's fair."

No close up photos of the offending parent.
Oh well. I’m sure the entire school already knows who he and his son are. Think of it this way, at least it wasn’t his Mother who decided to intervene. A kid would have an even harder time living that down.

The father thought it was a tag-team match.

My Dad did something similar to this when my brother was wrestling. He stormed out of the stands and had the match stopped when my brother’s opponent kept trying to make an illegal move to basically try to break my brother’s ankle, and the ref was almost doing an WWF move to always be on the other side of the wrestlers so “he couldn’t see” what was going on. IIRC, he basically grabbed the ref and stopped the whole thing, but my Dad had a bad leg, so it all happened is slow motion. My Dad was also the team Doctor, and was good friends with our coach. It was quite a scene, I was also in the stands and felt mortified at the time, but it was the right thing to do...

Was it also a dangerous move? Looked like the “victim” was dropped on his head.

My grandson was injured seriously by an illegal move only about 4 matches into his first season of wrestling. It was a 6+ months recovery and hardware that made him look like robot man.

But what kind of injury could happen when taken down unexpectedly by a parent? Wow, this guy needs anger management. And we call them refs. For the record, in my mind, wrestling ties with elementary school football for the worst sports.

Any time you read a media report about something that YOU know about, you realize how incorrect they are.

That's why you know they are wrong about EVERYTHING.

It’s so funny to see 22 year old local reporters presenting a story about which they know nothing with total confidence because they don’t know what they don’t know. The funniest one is ‘ant balls”. After a flood ants will gather into balls and float on the water. Inevitably when a young reporter sees one they think they have discovered something brand new that’s never been seen before.

I guess I should be careful what I ask for. Lol!
Thx.

A caption at the bottom should say:
“Don’t be this Dad!”
