Interesting background to this entry: Wolcott Gibbs is a chemist, who also has a medical degree, and close friend of George Strong. Henry Bellows is a prominent Unitarian pastor and a friend, apparently, of Mr. Ruggles. Bellows will be a prime mover in the establishment of the United States Sanitary Commission in 1861. Bellows, Gibbs and Strong will make up 3/5 of that Commission’s Executive Committee. Matthew Brady will photograph the group posed sitting and standing around a table.
