China's 'Mystery Virus' Could Be Far More Widespread Than Officials Say
SCIENCEAlert ^ | 20 JAN 2020

The true scale of the outbreak of a mysterious SARS-like virus in China is likely far bigger than officially reported, scientists have warned, as countries ramp up measures to prevent the disease from spreading.

Fears that the virus will spread are growing ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday, when hundreds of millions of Chinese move around the country and many others host or visit extended family members living overseas.

Authorities in China say two people have died and at least 45 have been infected, with the outbreak centred around a seafood market in the central city of Wuhan, a city of 11 million inhabitants that serves as a major transport hub.

Same people who believe China has this under control are the same people who believe Cuba when they claim an adult literacy rate over 99%

Next weekend is the Chinese New Year. A week before and after is the largest annual migration of people. Transportation hubs are usually packed with people going home or visiting relatives. One can only suspect that the numbers of infected will go up after the holiday.

New reports have come out with higher numbers - close to 200 sick. And a person in South Korea has been diagnosed with the disease. Steve Lookner read the news reports on his Agenda Free TV YouTube channel a little earlier tonight.

With China’s tendency to downplay these sorts of things, it’s probably a lot worse than anyone realizes.

Since the Chinese lie about pretty much everything it’s a good bet that this is very much worse than they’re admitting.

Good. And South Korea too. Let them all go meet their makers.

So far nothing causing the world to hole up behind plastic sheets and duct tape UNLESS this is actually an H5N1 virus with a human to human vector.

That’s the epidemiology of good science fiction outbreak movies. Make Ebola look like the JV squad.

Dog meat industries with horrific torture and cruelty. They believe it makes the meat taste better if the dogs are oh, blowtorched or boiled alive. Cats fare much worse.

Sadism beyond your wildest dreams. The planet doesn’t need their evil.

So yep, rooting for the virus, which apparently has spread to South Korea.

I clicked on a video some years back. Still gives me nightmares. How anyone can be that cruel to an animal is beyond me. If a plague wiped these people out I would rejoice.

[”It’s so strange,” wrote a web user on the social media platform Weibo, citing the overseas cases in Japan and Thailand. “They all have Wuhan pneumonia cases but (in China) we don’t have any infections outside of Wuhan - is that scientific?”]

Given the increased bother and expense of international vs domestic travel, it would not be surprising if the true Chinese numbers were a couple order of magnitude larger. Given the great expense associated with medical care there relative to incomes, and no requirement that emergency rooms admit patients even without up front payment, there are doubtless large numbers of infected languishing in homes and infecting kith and kin.
