British singer-songwriter James Blunt is best known for his sentimental heartbreak ballads Youre Beautiful and Goodbye My Lover, but his latest single Monsters, a tribute to his ailing father, is his rawest and most poignant yet.

I know he was also in the military like his dad and there is a famous story about something he did.
Can’t remember the exact details, but it was something to do with NATO, I believe.
Thanks for posting.
Touching songs about disease, dying, and death...
There is one song by Johnny Cash that
I played for my dad in November 2017 as my dad was “winding down” in the nursing home. Can’t remember the name, but it was about JC floating away to heaven, I think. Maybe someone will know it.
I love James Blunt. Such a moving music video (or whatever they call them today)
So touching! Where’s my kleenex :-O
I am there now. Heart breaking.
I loved the one about You’re Beautiful.” Makes me long for the one that got away. She was so beautiful I didn’t have a chance.
What a powerful love song. It must have filled his fathers heart with pride to be so loved by his son.
Lost my father on Father’s Day 2016 at 83 years old. When one loses a grandparent it’s tough, but a when you lose a parent mortality really hits you hard. Cherish your life, cherish your family, cherish the time you’ve been afforded.
Bump for later
I can relate.
My wife was literally "the girl next door" who, at 28, lost a battle with breast cancer. I never remarried but there was one (Ellen) who touched my heart like no other woman.
"There must be an angel with a smile on her face
When she thought up that I should be with you
But it's time to face the truth
I will never be with you."
Uhm... Whoah.
If anyone ever wants a more potent example of what they call an “ugly cry”, this video takes the cake.
Not just the man saying goodbye to his father, but two old soldiers...
When they finally unplug me and put the pennies on my eyes, all I ask for is for this to be played as they lower me into my eternal hole.......
Take a listen to this album, Gloria Avenue, by The Worn Flints. Several songs on the album were written in tribute to the frontmans sister, who passed from colon cancer a year or two ago. When she found out she was pregnant, she stopped all of her treatment, so her baby would have a chance at life. In part, it details the young mans journey with his not much older sister, and their saying goodbye to each other.
In particular, listen to songs
1. I Can Hear You Now
2. Oh, Brother
7. The Call
8. Angel of Death
&11. Morning Light

I often tell folks to enjoy each moment they can for they will not know the last time they see each other. So often, people think I’m being flippant.
Often when a person has only one parent left I let them know they will feel differently when that person passes; as an orphan.
So many people don’t realize how tied they are to both parents as a set.
With Singles raising their offspring these days though, it’s not the same thing, I guess...
Single mothers who feel they don’t need fathers deprive their offspring of so much...
Unless a person is bad both parents are needed...
Let me rephrase that: Both normal sane parents are needed.
