“I assume these coins were pure gold, not 22K?”


No, most coin gold is 90% or 22K (about the same), with the remainder being copper. Why? Because gold is a very soft metal and would get dented or deformed easily in circulation. Recently, several coins like the Buffalo 1 oz. have been made in 24K, as they are intended to be collectors’ coins only, and not handled.

I was surprised to find that some Krugerrands I had weighed a bit more than an ounce.
