We have mountain lions around here; have seen their paw prints in the snow in between house and garage, heard them scream (unearthly) and seen gigantic piles of scat. I am scared of them at night, I’ll admit.
A screaming mountain lion, like a screech owl, isn't something you'll forget. My advice?
Scream back. It really messes with their heads. Heh.
I keep a laser pointer in my first aid pouch when I'm in the mountains. I'd like to see if it works on the big kitties. Okay, it's for signalling aircraft at night. But still.
[survival tip: pilots wearing night vision goggles can see a laser pointer from miles and miles away. Don't point it at them, just wave it around and they can see where you are even if you can't. Learned from an Army SF whirlybird pilot. Personnel rescue and all that.]
