This is serious stuff. I have 3 grandchildren living with me who are aged between 6 and 13. They have two living parents who are not physically handicapped. (They are both the type of people who are continually intoxicated with marijuana vape. “Oh, oh, my blood cannabinol level has fallen, time to vape”. They must remain thoroughly intoxicated at all waking moments.)
Less than 6 hours ago, I was presenting the following analysis to my wife: Their 34 year old mother decided that consciously acting like a 13 year old for the full term of one’s life is the proper course of action. So, when the 13 year old grandchild was a baby, her Mother, then 22, went into 13 year old rebellion, against her infant daughter. Some cultural meme was presented in popular culture. I would like to identify it so I can confront the mother with it, when her growing children completely abandon her. The nearest I can come up with is that, when the 34 year old was in Jr. High School, she was “the tough girl” in the class play, and the role “stuck”.
You might blame me. But what can I do. The authorities can’t make the parents give the children a safe environment free of neglect and harm. I could decide to shun them all, but the children would be an even worse wreck.
Sad to hear, am familiar with similar situations.
Good men have been doing and saying nothing for many decades now, silenced by our women, launched with 19A, put on steroids with 70’s feminism.
We now see, inescapably, the very bitter fruits of our feminized society.
It’s a great unspoken truth, like the racism of blacks and the abnormality of homosexuals. Uncomfortable for benefactors of those deceits, but truths nonetheless. Tag line.
You are doing the right thing by taking care of these children, and giving them a chance in the world. I can’t tell from your writing whether the parent who is your child is the father or mother, but the obvious message to them is that irrespective of anything that happened in their lives prior to becoming adults, they will never have a bigger blessing, a bigger gift, and a more important and fulfilling responsibility as they have by being the parents of those children. Further, when their lives inevitably run down - as all lives on Earth do, they will have squandered the most amazing chance they will ever have for their lives to mean something amazing beyond themselves.
Anyway, my best to you, and to your grandchildren.

Speaking in a broad societal sense and not individually, the answer is, we as a society have been in good economic times, since WWII (with some downtime). If you think about it, a lot of consequences for our actions are non-existent or can be overcome with a little effort. You get pregnant, have an abortion, don't like life, get high and stay high, die from meth, don't worry the cops or EMS will give you narcam, don't want to grow up, stay at home with mommy and play video games or whore around with your friends. Most of wars are fought by our soldiers in far-away lands without the consequences looking us directly in the face.
With that said, there's always been drunks, wife-beaters and child abusers throughout history and in “hard-times”.
I'm not wishing for hard times/wars/depression but that is ultimately is what resets societies. Hard to screw around with your life when everyone and everything around you cannot support your indulgences.
Well, I haven’t walked in your shoes but if your kid(s) won’t take care of your grandchildren, then it is right of you to do so.
Many FReeper hardliners will say your are enabling your worthless kid(s). There might be truth in that but it’s not that simple. First, you can’t make an adult do anything short of holding a gun to their head and forcing them. No amount of nagging, tough love, reasoning will work. They ultimately have to decide to do something. If they won’t take care of themselves, they sure won’t take care of your grands. It’s best they are taken care of by yourself who love, feed, clothe and shelter them.

What children need is ADULTS !!!!! Maturity !!!!! Consistency !!!! Rules !!!
It seems that lots of kids and adults are into this. The most famous one of late is 'ReyLo' or an imagined relationship between Rey and Kylo Ren in the Disney Star Wars theory. When that relationship was not realized in the last movie the Reylos went crazy and launched death threats against the director, the actors, and their real life families.
The really creepy thing is that the relationships, however creepy (e.g. Snow White + Dopey = Snopey) is that they are just as likely to be Male/Male and Female/Female as Male/Female. Also there are 'ships' between characters that are underage, and ships between human or humanlike characters and animals.
A generation of kids is being led by degenerates to see gay, pedophile, and bestial relationships to be just as normal as straight ones via their favorite comics and animations.
There are people arguing against the shippers, but no one dares brings up the normalization of homosexuality angle.
Oh, and My Little Pony now features a lesbian couple. That should get the Bronies real excited.
