Another head coach hiring cycle is about to close, and again the most embarrassing issue concerning the NFL has taken center stage.
I dont say that lightly considering this is a league that has been navigating various clown shows for the better part of two decades.
Still, it was striking to see the visceral reaction of many pundits and former players on social media Tuesday once the New York Giants decision to hire Joe Judge and the Carolina Panthers choice to hire Matt Rhule became public.
Both those franchises chose those men to lead their organizations into the future, largely because they truly believed they were the best men for the job. Rhule is respected for his forward-thinking nature and ability to develop players and men, while Judge is a highly respected special teams coach who is regarded as a smart guy with good schemes and a presence.
In a vacuum, both men deserve a shot to show what they can do as NFL head coaches, and both teams are free to hire whoever they feel is the best fit for their organization.

I rememeber Bieniemy from his days as a RB at Colorado.
In contrast to Black QBs...
The white guys are getting fired too.
EVERY year only ONE team wins the Super bowl.
The head coach of that team is considered a genius.
ALL the other coaches are losers.
Skin color has NOTHING to do with it.
“Winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing” -Lombardi
The standard is win. Nothing has changed
Just one of the reasons we will never be rid of Tomlin in Pittsburgh. The Rooneys will never fire him. And if gets coach of the year may carry him down Liberty Ave in a litter like Pharoh.
So that's 12.5%, So what is the representation across America?? According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 12.3% of the U.S. population is black, and 12.5% is Hispanic So the real diversity problem is, do the percentage of team players reflect our society?
Hire Bieniemy for crying out loud. I like the idea of limited racial mixing.
What about Asian coaches?
Need a Trans coach too...right?
Once in, never out. It's like a congressional seat or a Supreme court vacancy. Replacements must be of the same racial & sexual makeup, altho a transsexual head coach would be an automatic hire.
They are more interested in golfing on the LPGA tour.
Or black college football coaches who have won NCAA titles
Or those who have advanced to the CFP Final Four
Gee, is there anything that white guys do well, Yahoo? Anything?
Of course, what they really are railing against is the lack of Black Owners.
Would bienemy have even deserved an interview if not for the token Rooney rule?
So much for content of character
I have a dream...ahh never mind.
Currently four of the leagues 32 franchises are guided by minority coaches Rivera in Washington, Mike Tomlin in Pittsburgh, Anthony Lynn in Los Angeles and Brian Flores in Miami. And of the five new head coaching openings this offseason, three went to white men (Judge, Rhule and Mike McCarthy) while the fourth went to Rivera, who is Hispanic.
Lynn and Flores have not done well. Tomlin is a great coach who probably did his best job this year. The idea that Rivera is a minority is laughable. More than 50% of so-called Hispanics self describe themselves as white. Rivera has a winning record in the NFL as a head coach.
Bieniemy has the good fortune to coach Patrick Mahomes, a genuine superstar who has a cast of great receivers. I assume that NFL owners gauge his performance as offensive coordinator considering what he has on the field.
Being a head coach requires organizational and managerial skills. Has Bieniemy demonstrated those skills? The Rooney rule should be discarded. We have moved beyond the need for such rules. The owners want results and will hire anyone who can deliver them. There is a reason why 70% of NFL players are black. It is called merit.
The whole problem of Bieniemy is how much credit does he deserve. Andy Reid is known for his offensive schemes and play calling. Any decent coach would like fantastic with the Chiefs loaded with offensive weapons.
