Great football coaches are often guys who spent a lot of time walking the sidelines instead of playing in games ... which is something great players never did.
Its the same reason why former backup catchers make up a disproportionate number of baseball managers. Catchers know the game well, and the backups spend a lot of time on the bench just watching the game and discussing its intricacies with the manager and coaching staff.

True, especially in baseball, where the better managers seem to come from the journeyman player class, many of whom never even made it to major league ball.
