King Tides: Using an app to measure rising sea levels (only 11.11 years left)

In Norfolk, Virginia, which is surrounded by water, the land barely rises above sea level, and the sea level is rising. So, flooded streets and front yards have become a way of life.

But now after years of fretting about the flooding, a group of ordinary people has come up with a novel response, reports correspondent Brook Silva-Braga.

As the tide rose, the water kept creeping toward John Bluming's house, which now sits on stilts.

"The water comes up from Callie Bay, into the street," he said … and right into his yard. "After I bought the house, I realized it was a common occurrence."

**SNIP**

The U.S. government says, globally, the sea level has risen more than three inches in just the last 25 years.

So Mayfield got an idea: He knew each fall, the alignment of the moon, Earth and sun cause what's known as a "king tide" – an otherwise normal high tide that's especially strong and, more importantly, predictable.

Whew! At least my SUV was left out of the equation - this time.

'"The water comes up from Callie Bay, into the street," he said … and right into his yard.'

I've been waiting for my neighbor's bass pond to do that for years. Me, a covered porch, a cold beer, a couple of rods........but it only makes it to the end of the driveway when it floods, damn it. *sigh*

I’m always afraid to say Norfolk, for fear of mispronunciation, and inadvertently saying a vulgar word.

“...John Bluming’s house, which now sits on stilts.”

I wonder how long it has been on stilts? In fact, how easy is it to take a house and put it on stilts?

“After I bought the house, I realized it was a common occurrence.”

So it has been doing this for awhile. Perhaps a very long time. One would think you would look into stuff like that. Like driving from a prospective new home to work during commuting hours. (I guess an app can tell you that now).

“The U.S. government says, globally, the sea level has risen more than three inches in just the last 25 years.”

THREE INCHES!!?? So how accurate is this new app? Even $500 dedicated GPS unit can only get elevations to a few tenths of a foot.

Sounds like it’s REALLY bad in New England -

The seas along the East Coast from North Carolina to New England are rising three to four times faster than the global average, and coastal cities, utilities, beaches, and wetlands are increasingly vulnerable to flooding, especially from storm surges, according to the US Geological Survey study published Sunday.

I don’t worry, I have an app on my smartphone that alerts me when the sea levels have reached my ankles here in the high desert of E. Washington state.

Normal sea level rise according to NOAA, is about 5 to 6 inches per century. What is happening in Norfolk is subsidence.

“The U.S. government says, globally, the sea level has risen more than three inches in just the last 25 years.”

The instrumentation and the computer programming that the “US government” uses does not have the precision to determine that there was a 3 inch rise in sea levels. Additionally the U.S. government's researchers were infiltrated by leftists with an agenda over the past couple of decades. So this is all nonsense as usual.
