Rode 30 with the wife yesterday and will again today. Global warming is making it easier to ride in January!

The damn Radfahrers choke our roads and become more arrogant every spring. I tell my neighbors here in Germany what we used to call bicyclists in America:

Targets

The electric power-assist bikes may significantly increase the use of bikes (I was admiring an electric-assist Trek Domane online just last night--prices will come down).

They enable less fit bikers to use a bike to run errands and commute...even to stay with the fit/fast bike crowd and to improve their fitness without realizing it. They enable bikers to ride to work a little faster regardless of their level of fitness.

And most important, they enable the eco-baby Thunbergs of the world to virtue signal about saving the planet while they get fit and ride with the fit/fast bike peloton from the get-go.;-)

As an aside, I ride with a very fast crowd on Saturdays (I am usually hanging on to the rear by a thread). Several of the guys I ride with would entice their wives to join us with e-assist bikes.

It is such a mystery why unhealthy lardasses in motor vehicles hate bikers.

What could it possibly be?

In six to ten years (54yo now) I will probably buy one.

I will add one to the inventory eventually (I am 71 but still at peak fitness).

I live in a "golf cart friendly" town (whatever that means). It will be interesting to see if they catch on here.

They would certainly free up a lot of soccer moms.

I'm 60 y.o. now, and for the last 5 years or so (at least) I've been saying I'm going to buy one of those relaxed-geometry endurance road bikes. And every year I come to realize that my lugged-steel Mondonico still gets the job done.

Oh, well. Maybe some day ...

Politics, one author wrote, is the art of determining who gets what, where and when.

Let me explain the road situation here at the foot of the Alps about an hour by car from Munich. Typically, a city dweller in Munich bent on a lovely outing, will join members of his bicycle club, stack bicycles on his car and consume petroleum products, exhaust CO2, and clog the autobahn getting to my area. He will then join his enthusiasts, often in gaggle's of 10 or more, and commandeer our local roads. I understand the law requires them in such groups to ride side-by-side, further clogging traffic.

Often, they eschew the expensive bicycle paths provided for them and make their majestic way down the roads in competition with automobiles.

In this resort area, the roads become a nightmare every sunny day especially every sunny weekend day. Some locals make a fortune renting bicycles to daytrippers and they are making even more money with the newly popular electric bikes which enable those you so compassionately described as "unhealthy lardasses " to further congest our roads.

All the while, wrapping themselves in a banner of green, they demand politicians give them legal priority to the road. These people are not on the road for business, they are not commuting to work, they are not saving the world from CO2 pollution, they are on a lark.

Their right to the road is in competition with my right to the road. I do not regard their right for a pleasure trip to be superior to mine as I conduct my affairs.

If bicyclists would be just a little bit less arrogant, a little bit more circumspect, a little bit more observant of bicycle paths, and a little bit less self-righteous, perhaps you would not be calling other people "idiots."
