apparently J.B. doesn’t realize that that particular meme gets conservatives banned in bulk from social media whenever they use it ... i wonder if J.B. will be banned and/or now it’s OK to say “learn to code” on social media? ... NAAAAAAAAAA ...

Why is it that I suspect that a Democrat-run re-education camp for coal miners would teach them using IBM 029 Hollerith punch card machines so they could run programs using Fortran and Cobol on green screen tube monitors?

My Dad started out with computers as a key-punch operator just after WWII. When I was in the USAF in 1976, My Dad thought it was a "hoot" that I had to send our daily report to the Defense Communications Agency (DCA) that I typed on punch cards through the Data Center. I wish my Dad had lived long enough fo me to be able to tell him that years later, for the telephone switch billing files, I also swapped out and spooled magnetic tapes, just like he did in the 1960's.

Dad worked at the Medium Transformer Division plant in Rome, GA I’m sure he visited every plant and other business locations with his role as GE spokesman. Another stepping stone to a great life.

Yes, Reagan did the full tour of most GE plants.

I work in analytics including machine learning. I’ve seen the industry change so it’s not just coding.

“Anybody who can go down 3,000 feet in a mine can sure as hell learn to program as well... Anybody who can throw coal into a furnace can learn how to program, for God’s sake!”

is bull.

It requires two different skillsets.

What I worry is how my work is affecting the hard-working miners - if we automate everything, where do people get the jobs?

Too funny! In 1978 I was working at a fairly large data center. One of the computer operators signed up for a night class in programming and they were teaching using punch cards and those old coding sheets that were legal size, in landscape orientation with the 80 columns and, I think, 25 rows per sheet. He was flabbergasted because our developers were writing their schtuff on CRT screens.

We did still have an 029 punch and a reader in the data center because there still was a need from time to time, and all our backups were to 9-track tape. So we weren't quite out of the bronze age then, but we had one foot into more modern practices.

Very cool six degrees of separation with the Facebook friend. Not an fb participant, but I have seen some incredible coincidences on LinkedIn with people who notice that they have a completely unrelated person as a common link...different parts of the world, industries, etc.

Regarding my FR nom de plume, I can tell you that I am no menace!
