Wiki Has Released Over 83,500 Vintage Sewing Patterns Online For Download

Like sewing?

Well you’ll love this news: the Vintage Patterns Wiki has released more than 83,500 patterns of pre 1992, out of print patterns for all to use.

The browsable collection runs the gamut from Dynasty-inspired pussy bow power suits to Betty Draper-esque frocks featuring models in white gloves to an 1895 boys’ Reefer Suit with fly-free short trousers.

Visitors can narrow their search to focus on a particular garment, designer or decade.

I have taken my wife on that date a few hundred times if we add in quilting stores, cross stitch stores and needle point stores. She calls me her “enabler.”

She also refers to me as the “CEO” and explains it means “Carries Everything Out.”

A Wisconsin animal shelter employee is being hailed for using her crocheting skills to help a cat find its forever home.

Back in December, a stray cat named Lady in a Fur Coat was brought into the Dane County Humane Society (DCHS) with chronic ear infections and hematomas. The veterinary team immediately conducted surgery on her ears, but since her condition was too severe, they eventually opted to remove the outer layers of her ears.

Lady made a full recovery from the surgery, but staffers worried that her changed appearance would deter potential adopters.

That’s when DCHS employee Ash Collins decided to craft a set of fuzzy purple crocheted ears for Lady.

After Collins bribed Lady with a number of head rubs and kitty treats, she managed to secure the sweet little bonnet onto Lady’s head—and the results were adorable.

Upon posting photos of Lady and her stylish new ears to social media earlier this month, she was successfully adopted from the shelter.

“Staff and volunteers at Dane County Humane Society consistently go above and beyond for the animals in our care,” Collins told CNN.

“I was more than happy to use my crochet skills to help Lady stand out and get the second chance she deserved, and I’m so honored to be a small part of her happy ending.” <

My sister sent me that link a few weeks ago. Interesting that I still have many of those same patterns in some of my file boxes from back then. I’ll never sew any of them ever again, but I can’t bear to give them up.

Ribbed Watchman's Hat
This is a very basic, easy to knit, utilitarian hat & that's why I chose this pattern.

I was "playing around" with extra yarn so this hat is done in Lion Brand Pound of Love, Oxford Grey color. I used size 8 circular knitting needles with the Magic Loop technique.

Note regarding yarn:
LB Pound of Love is a "thin" 4 weight. It has a "GRIST" (yards per ounce) of 63.75. The higher the GRIST, the thinner the yarn. For comparison, I Love This Yarn is a Grist of 50.71, Red Heart Super Saver has a GRIST of 52 & Vanna's Choice is a rather heavy weight 4 at a GRIST of 48.5.

In knitting mittens, with the ILTY & Super Saver, I use 7 needles, with the LB Pound of Love, I have to use the larger size 8. I've not made mittens with Vanna's Choice - it's just too thick for the pattern I'm using, IMO.

Finding out about GRIST has seriously helped me in figuring out yarn substitutions - a 4 weight yarn can be anywhere from "chubby" to "thin" .... gauge and amount of yarn plus weight of the finished item are all impacted by GRIST.
