Appearing on CNN with Anderson Cooper, singer Linda Ronstadt compared President Trump to Hitler and says she sees “great parallels” between the United States now and the Weimar Republic in Germany.
Anderson Cooper:
I’ve read that you have read a lot about the Weimar Republic in Germany, and you sort of see parallels between then and now.
Linda Ronstadt:
Great parallels. I mean the intelligentsia of Berlin and literati and all artists were just doing their thing, and as Hitler rose to power, there were a lot of chances to stop him, and they didn’t speak out. The industrial complex thought they could control him once they got him in office, and of course, he was not controllable.
By the time he got established, he put his own people in place and stacked the courts and did what he had to do to consolidate his power, and we got Hitler. He destroyed Germany, destroyed centuries of intellectual history, forward and backward. People like Beethoven, Goethe, and Thomas Mann became jokes. They became Nazi laughing stocks.

I think a lot of people would be surprised to hear comparisons between what happened then and now.
Linda Ronstadt:
If you read the history, you won’t be surprised. It is exactly the same. You find a common enemy for everybody to hate. I was sure that Trump was going to get elected the day he announced. I said he’s going to—it is going to be like Hitler and the Mexicans are the new Jews. And sure enough, that is what he delivered.
Someone in the audience being a Republican or Christian clouds her enjoyment? Seriously?
It’s a sign of absolute pure hatred and intolerance, so typical of a far left rat nut job.

I just saw a great German movie called “look who’s back”. It’s a mix of the late 70’s after school TV special, “The Wave” and a dash of Natural Born Killers with a little bit of a hit on modern populism thrown in for good measure.
The interesting part is that it is showing how Hitler came to power in the first place by sort of trying to either “ding” the modern populist movement or warn about the current leaders creating an environment ripe for “Hitler II”, depending on your politics.
Without giving much away, Hitler suddenly appears at the location of where his WWII bunker was and, from his perspective, it is just before he “died”, but it’s really 2014. The way the culture reacts to him is fascinating and educational.
Oh, and at one point in the movie Hitler says he’s trying to “Make Germany great again.” ;)

The parallels are there, regarding the causes. The question is, is the result the same? No. It’s populism, but of a different sort. And it is like comparing the American Revolution to the French Revolution. They had completely different results and new forms of government, though they were both revolutions.
The parallels are definitely there in the cause, but the result is definitely different in the US. We are in a different time, a different constitution and a different culture than Germany.
I’ve been breathlessly waiting for her sage comments.
She was schtupping Jerry Brown for years. That should have been a hint.
And I used to like Linda Ronstadt. Spent too much time with Moonbeam - got her brain scrambled.
