I have questioned this for a long time....
FWIW, the infamous Big D*** Anon says that the U.S. Government has a method for converting lead into gold at a cost of $5/oz, and has been doing it for some time at Area 51. He sounded serious about it, but the Carl Sagan Standard applies here: "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence." Q has met that standard many times. BDA, not so much.

[Kit’s theory] During the Cold War, the Federal holdings were likely dispersed to a variety of locations around the continental U.S. Why leave all your gold in one place when the Soviets could drop a nuke on it (a la Goldfinger)? There are other more secret, secure, locations to store it in smaller batches.
Explains why no audit and no visit by congressmen except for the one famous one. Who would trust congress not to reveal the locations of our national wealth?
The unanswered question is, “does it still exist, or has it been stolen by elite in the know?” Dunno.
