Russian Aircraft Carrier will not get Salvaged and Repaired
Next Big Future ^ | December 12, 2019 | Brian Wang

Posted on 12/21/2019 1:01:27 PM PST by Vince Ferrer

Russia’s only aircraft carrier has a fire that has covered over 600 square meters (6000 square feet) of the carrier. Even if the fire is put out, Nextbigfuture predicts that the carrier will not be worth salvaging.

Currently, the ship is being flooded with water and chemicals to douse electrical wiring and diesel fuel fires. Those chemicals are wrecking all of the electronics and electrical systems that are not being burned in the fire. The fire is wrecking the engine.

The carrier was already a 30-year old lemon. It was towed back from the coast of Spain in 2012.

It was put in for a 3-year repair program in 2017. Those repairs were budgeted at $340 million. In 2018, a 70-ton crane fell and sank Russia’s only drydock large enough to service the aircraft carrier. The crane knocked a 210-foot hole in the carrier deck.

The fire, whole and chemical damage have driven the cost of salvaging the carrier to over $2 billion. It would be better to start over.

Russia has had no usable aircraft carrier since 2017. Russia will officially have no carrier for the next ten years.

Russia’s whole navy has problems. They had a spy submarine sink in July 2019 and killed 14 sailors.

The Russian fleet has declined from a true oceangoing force with long-range battlecruisers and destroyers to a mostly coastal force operating small, short-range vessels.

In 2019, Russia got 23 new surface ships but only seven are armed combatants. One is a Gorshkov-class frigate (4,500 tons) and six are missile corvettes (2000 tons).

US Coast Guard cutters are 4500-ton ships.

The U.S. fleet in total displaces 4.6 million tons of water. The Chinese fleet displaces 1.8 million tons. The Russian fleet displaces just 1.2 million tons. The Russian Navy has really lost its one aircraft carrier. The Russian fleet is probably only 1.1 million tons.

The U.S. fleet can carry around 12,000 offensive missiles. Chinese ships in total can carry 5,200 missiles. Russia’s fleet packs no more than 3,300.

What is the total number of launches and landings on that ship’s flight deck? I’m guessing not many.

"China can pick it up cheap on Craig’s List...they are already driving around another fixer-upper they got from the Russkies...

China could get into a carrier-flipping business. I sure wouldn't buy one from them.

I think it’s pertinent to see Russia as a primarily landlocked nation.

Any significant coastline it has is on the Pacific adjacent to Japan which has a significant navy fleet. Eastern Russia has never been highly populated or protected because there just isn’t much there worthy of an invasion. In WWII Russia did not even engage in war with Japan even though Japan was an AXIS power, because they knew they would be wiped out.

Russia has had small fleets in the Black Sea - but getting through the Bosporus is always a problem. The Baltic fleets face ice problems half the year and the same problem of being far too removed from the open seas without having to pass through enemy waters.

This is one reason why Russia wants Crimea, but what they would really like is to have Estonia and other Baltic States back (not likely to happen).

That is why the Russian Military has always been largely based on tanks and infantry - they had some of the best tanks in WWII and enough men to keep calling up new recruits directly to the front consistently throughout the war despite huge losses.

I’m all for starting rumors to take over the LSM....I HEARD from a reliable but anonymous source who heard it from a patron in a Russian bar that Trump is going to let Putin borrow some of our aircraft carriers. If Putin doesn’t accept that offer, Trump will promise to pay for the building of new ones.

What I need to do the project K5.

I’m fighting the battle of the CJ7 body tub bolts when I have it in me to work on the thing.

I guess I will have fork out for a torch. Besides, I have some other uses for the fire.

The left hates Russia because, aside from the religious thing, they outlawed promotion of the homosexual agenda.

That is unbelievable to liberals.

They are pouring money into their arctic naval forces with new nuclear heavy and medium icebreakers coming on line almost monthly, plus their floating nuclear power station ship Akademik Lomonosov is now headed to the arctic.

The unfinished sister ship to this one, Ukraine sold to china.
Not exactly from the Riskies...

Such a deal!
Buy, sell trade!

“It was originally commissioned in the Soviet Navy, and was intended to be the lead ship of the two-ship Kuznetsov class. However, its sister ship Varyag was still incomplete when the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991.[8] The second hull was eventually sold by Ukraine to the People’s Republic of China, completed in Dalian and commissioned as Liaoning.[9]”

The are building another ski jump carrier (nuclear power) as well as a flat topped (nuclear power) carrier - a CVN Ford (but smaller) equivalent with EMALS (Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System).

They are a fast growing blue water navy which even the old Soviet navy would be in awe of. They need only the skill to manufacture jet turbine blades and then they are militarily off to the races

I believe you are correct.

Putin said a few years ago that the church was going to save Russia.

Russia sometimes makes more sense than the U.S. does.

I just watched that movie yesterday! “Hunt for Red October” was an enjoyable movie. I think the best character was Sam Neill as the Russian XO.
