The records of hundreds of millions Facebook users was discovered in a online forum on the dark web.
The unsecure database contained the IDs, phone numbers and full names of 267 million users, most of which reside in the US.
Although it is not yet clear how the sensitive information was exposed, experts speculate the database was compiled through an illegal process called ‘scraping’ – automated bots copied public information from Facebook profiles.
Access to the database has since been removed, however, the recorders were available online for two weeks before the leak was discovered.

Yeah, when Facebook asks you to enter your phone number tell them to go scratch.
Scammers wouldn’t need to ‘get’ your phone number, they merely need to have robots randomly call numbers listening for someone to answer.
There was a time when every adult was listed in a book, it was called the phone book
Before phones were common, there were CITY DIRECTORY where adults were listed, spouse as well as occupation. It is interesting to note that there were also reverse directories . That is when an address was listed and then the names of the family living there.
The only difference is if they get your username and password which I am sure we all change on a regular basis. /s

Since half the population uses qwerty, password, 111111, 12345678, abc123, 1234567, password1, or 12345 for ALL of their online accounts, it’s rather easy for the bad guys to break in given the username.
I get alerts from Transunion that my email address has been found in various dark web collections of hundreds of millions of usernames. They say “change your password now.” But I’ve got probably 200 accounts and have no idea which one to change.

Incompetent? Only the actual users are the fools. How many time does this need to occur until the users wise up? I’d like to analyze the percentage of Pubes/Conservatives versus rats users.
I’ve gotten those calls in the past and I do NOT do social media and would never give actually factual information like that.
I’d make stuff up, like when they ask for my birthdate.
That happened to my office mate and my oldest daughter this week. Both hung up
