significant indications the not all Republican members of
the Senate are highly motivated to defend him , and even a
few may have powerful motivation to NOT defend him.

There is no question the senate will allow Trump to at least answer, and that is a defense even if sans witnesses.
It's up to the senate to figure out how much process has to occur in order to preserve the senate's credibility, and public (and history) acceptance of the outcome.
As for turncoats, takes 2/3rd to convict. Trump is safe. Plus, the articles really are a joke. The public might be that stupid, I don't know.
