I’m curious as to what the real cost is, not in dollars, but what does it actually damage to the body to accomplish this? Turn them into hybrids, maybe?

It certainly could do that. Hybrids without debilitating deformities that allows the body to succumb the aging process.
DNA manipulation that changes their paternal DNA - seed of the serpent.
