A nuclear attack would most likely target one of these 6 US cities — but experts say none of them are prepared

A nuclear attack on US soil would most likely target one of six cities: New York, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, or Washington, DC.

But public-health experts say any of those cities would struggle to provide emergency services to the wounded.

The cities also no longer have designated fallout shelters to protect people from radiation.

Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

The chance that a nuclear bomb would strike a US city is slim, but nuclear experts say it's not out of the question.

A nuclear attack in a large metropolitan area is one of the 15 disaster scenarios for which the US Federal Emergency Management Agency has an emergency strategy. The agency's plan involves deploying first responders, providing immediate shelter for evacuees, and decontaminating victims who have been exposed to radiation.

Living near missile silos in deep fly over country is not potentially problematic?

It’s just to stir up the Democrat zombies; that would be my guess.

If you saw the “big blue flash” you didn’t worry about it.

In 1971 a friend of mine woke up to a big blue flash in Sylmar CA, and just laid back down. He thought it would be over in the next second. Turned out it was just an electrical transformer exploding in the earthquake. He was quite relieved.

"What’s wrong with Boston? If I were nuking a city, Boston would be first on the list."

I've had with you people who say such things. You do realize all the dim/socialists cities you all mention, also have millions of innocent men, women, and children. Plus, none you think of the horrific economic ramifications to our Nation. I'm outta here. Can't read your stupid fantasies or lame jokes any longer.

An enemy would be foolish to waste any ordnance at all on that entire area."

[ I sleep well knowing that our Tridents are cruising the oceans and every nation in the world know they are out there, but never know where they are. ]

Yes. A great hammer.

The next big war will start by taking out satellites, I would guess. The launches will come immediately afterwards.

The thing is that given the yield of Russian “city buster” nuclear warheads (around 25 MT), a single 25 MT nuclear bomb would render all fallout shelters up to 25 miles from Ground Zero effectively useless—you’ll be dead from the initial multi-thousand degree heat pulse of the fireball.

The notion that once could compare of this is infantile. It merely an excuse to gouge taxpayers for billions that will mostly be diverted to line corrupt local politicians pockets.

I was born in 1957 and lived my whole life under the nuclear damocles sword until the collapse of the Soviet Union post 1989. Thank you Ronald Reagan. Since then there is a nuclear threat still but it is much diminished.

I think the missile field was relocated to sparsely-populated areas in the West / Northwest (kinda).

[Can one prepare?]

Not much, I’d think. Especially if you’re within a few miles under the detonation.

Sure. It's not like the old days when the USSR would have hit us with hundreds of nukes - so many they'd be no place to hide from radiation.

If a few cities were hit by North Korea or Iran, people in those cities who survived in initial blast could 'shelter in place' until it was safe to evacuate to a city 50 or a hundred miles away.

It would take some thought... but MIT engineers could probably come up with some ideas to block radiation for 6 or 7 few days. And outfits to wear to drive to a safer city. Some of the worst stuff is slow moving particles that can be stopped with plastic...or maybe blocked with paints. There are answers.

I’d guess this list is based on a terror attack. I’m sure a military attack would be very different.

An enemy would be foolish to use nukes on us at all.

If I were the ChiComs I’d pay to move the people who destroyed places like Detroit (gangs and their families) to other cities I wanted to similarly wreck knowing that the Left would act like even suggesting they’re the problem was racist even as they rushed to help them and to make sure they could stay in their new homes.

This begs the question, is it even possible to prepare for a nuclear attack in any real way? The answer most nations have found is that a nuclear attack is so extreme to really prepare for one is impossible.
