IF I could give President Trump advice directly, as a former Provost Marshal, I would tell him that the DoD has MANY perfectly serviceable Colt & S&W .38SPL revolvers in unit arms rooms & in depot storage, as well as the current standard issue M9 & M11 handguns.
(Thus, the armed defense personnel would cost the taxpayers little or nothing & the personal defense status of all would be enhanced.)
Commissioned & Warrant Officers, Senior NCOs in grades E7-E9 & other selected/trained/background investigated/range-qualified military, GS & WG personnel should be armed with concealed handguns for “stand-by” post defense.
(I know that this would work, as when I was a PM years ago at a large in size but with a small number of “permanent party” personnel, we armed all of the commissioned, warrant & the SNCO, as well as the military staff-members of RANGE CONTROL. - After training by Range Control, the “selected personnel” were “sworn in” & appointed as Post Deputy Game Wardens, i.e., reserve LE personnel.)
After the new Deputy Game Wardens existence was announced in the Post Daily Bulletin, the crime general crime-rate on post decreased by 28% overall & poaching decreased by almost HALF, at essentially NO cost to the budget & thereafter remained at that level.
(The identity of the new PDGM was NOT announced. - Potential criminals of all sorts are generally UNWILLING to commit crimes, if every military sedan, truck or “Army OD” pickup that they see MIGHT have a sworn PDGM aboard.)
