Reach ‘peak meat’ by 2030 to tackle climate crisis, say scientists: Reducing meat and dairy consumption will cut methane and allow forests to thrive
UK Guardian ^ | December 12, 2019 | Damian Carrington

Livestock production needs to reach its peak within the next decade in order to tackle the climate emergency, scientists have warned.

They are calling for governments in all but the poorest countries to set a date for “peak meat” because animal agriculture is a significant and fast-growing source of global greenhouse gas emissions.

Cattle and sheep emit large amounts of methane while forests are destroyed to create pasture and grow the grains that are fed to intensively reared animals.

The world’s scientists agree that huge amounts of carbon dioxide will have to be removed from the atmosphere to limit global heating to 1.5C. More than 80% of farmland is used for livestock but it produces just 18% of food calories.

I do not know where they come up with 80%. I am assuming it included grasslands used for grazing cattle. The grasslands of North America, Canada, and Argentina were never forests that is why they were areas used for grazing in the first place.

There is more forested acreage in the United States now, than at the time of the founding.

Never been to Morton’s. How does it compare to Ruth’s Chris? (I consistently cook better steaks than RC. Unless Morton’s is significantly better, I probably can’t afford it. Affording means value for $ spent.)

I saw BBQ crickets for sale in my local HEB. Was going to purchase it just to taste, then I realized that a steak would taste better. And I chose the porterhouse.

To be fair to the issue-one day a “Beyond Meat” type product will be just as good as the real thing. That day is close to arriving. Should make for much more affordable beef-like food.
I have heard the burgers from plants taste pretty good.

I see what you did there.

But will the porridge bird still lay his egg in the air?

Do these 'scientists' pull these ideas out of their methane venting orifices?

But, the animal waste is what makes plants grow! Unless you replace it with man-made fertilizers.

In our area, years ago successful farmers said their land would be unproductive without the massive amounts of chicken waste spread on the land.
Same for cow, horse and pig waste. It all stinks, but as one said “That stink is MONEY!”

No problems...we will do what people have done, especially in Asia, in the past. Use human feces as fertilizer replacing the animals poop.

We’ve been warned in the past not to eat highly processed foods.
Now they want us to eat highly processed soy and vegie products as fake meat.

If MEAT is so bad, why are they making vegie burgers taste like MEAT! they should taste like grass or broccoli or soy.

Just saw him a couple of weeks ago on some Bourdain rerun titled “Food Porn 2”.

Translation: all you plebes need to give up meat, cars and move to a 300 sq ft apt in the city. That way we can keep track of you and control you better.

How about my favorite GREENBEEFOS. The Ultimate Catalyst (1939). Plants that taste and bleed like beef. But what a price to pay!

what they are talking about when they say it will let forests thrive is that they want to take the land that ranches are on and replant them with trees- They are sick in the head- They believe the world belongs to animals, not man- and that we have ‘stolen their land’- it is nature worship 101-

[[When humans didn’t dominate, and there were millions upon millions of cattle like animals, what saved the planet then?]]

exactly!

Bison were so numerous that it took days, literally, for herds to pass by- and that was just bison- there were many more herd animals that also had huge numbers-

of course the lying slimy climate alarmists will simply counter this by claiming “Yeah, but back then CO2 levels weren’t this high’ which is also BS because in the past levels were much much higher- and animals thrived just fine as did the planet- levels were over 1000 ppm- today they are an anemic 420 ppm or so
