Michael Kosanovich, 21, was eyeing a 2002 Lexus at 148th St. and Foch Blvd. in South Jamaica when the owner inadvertently started the car’s remote ignition about 9:45 p.m. Saturday.

The car was not in park and when the remote was triggered it lurched forward, pinning Kosanovich between the luxury car and another parked Lexus, cops said.

After market was my thought also. Factory remote ignitions usually require the car to be in park and locked to prevent theft once you start it remotely.

I think most cars are way above idle speed at initial startup for a short period of time, especially at colder temperatures.

Not certain about factory installed but after market is almost always do’able.

They were fine cars, especially the AWD wagons.

The after market remote starters were being installed (in my experience) back to 1992 when I was in the biz.

Manufacturer "anti-theft" measures made things more difficult but we were always able to override or bypass such measures...with some work and smarts.

Example; Back in 1985, GM introduced VATS. Vehicle Anti-Theft System. The keys had a little black chip on the shaft. That was a resistor. The value of the resistor was programmed in to the car's ECM...electronic control module (computer). We had to take each key presented to us, measure the resistance and then measure the resistance of three separate wires in the steering column. The bugaboo was that there were different values for each wire for separate events...one when the key was inserted, one when the key was turned to on and the third was when the key was turned all the way forward to start. We had to interface our resistors into each wire to bypass the key chip for a remote starter.

Three different wires, three different resistance values, so three different resistors. Such fun.

speaking of shakedowns, sounds like the Prius acceleration problem that magically popped up when Obama motors was trying to get the Volt off the ground and the gummint went after Toyota.

Please refrain from abusing the news forum. This is chat material.

Motor vehicle accidents are chat material? And just how would I have known that? It certainly looked like news to me.
If it had appeared on NY Post's Page Six, or maybe the TMZ website, I would agree, but it didn't.
What criteria do you use to discern the difference? Where can I go to read category definitions?

I don’t know of any car that will start if not in Park or Neutral.”””

Me either-—That is what the ‘Neutral Safety Switch” is all about.

Factory defect? Huge lawsuit here, IMO.

I wonder if the cops are going to look into the personal history of the buyer and the car’s owner, to see if they have a past relationship in any way, in any way that may have led to what looks like an accident, but maybe is not.

I know a car can be started remotely by key fob that is provided with that signalling function. I did not know an automatic transmission car could be stared when it is not in the parking gear. I think all manual transmission cars require the pressing of the clutch pedal to start. And some cars will not start without a foot pressing the brake pedal.

If there was a malfunction of the remote start feature of the car it could be asked if that malfunction was an accident, or if it’s function was altered.

Either way, one thing is certain. There is a lawsuit in the future for some individual or company connected to the car.

What criteria do you use to discern the difference?

That it is local news about a car accident posted on the main news page of a political forum.
