I just updated my $500-but-now-worthless Nokia 950XL phone. I want to factory reset it to use it for something else. Will I need to update it again? Or can I switch users securely so my main user account won't be compromised?
I plan to only use it to access my social media accounts through EDGE.
I'm using a Motorola z4 now. I'm not happy to be using Android, but iPhones are horribly expensive. Thank you in advance for your help.
Do you have any advice for this?
I have a Twitter account I use only for weather/climate, and I thought I’d use this phone for that and keep it off of my main account. It’s amazing how touchy people can get when arguing about climate!
You can buy older unlocked iPhones for less than your moto
Direct form Apple: iPhone 8
4.7-inch display
From $18.70/mo. per month
or $449
I dropped that amount on my z4.
My son might take it over. He has a z3 and wants a z4.
I actually like the phone, I just don’t like google getting all up in my chili. I don’t use any of their services, I installed all MS apps. The only one I couldn’t get was, obviously, Maps.
If I get an iPhone, it will be the 11+, I’m that nuts.

Agreed .. or you could wait for the 12 with 5G ... for a truly insane moment
I’m not that impressed with 5G. It can be blocked by anything, even your own body. China is using “sub-6” 5G, but we are at the low end of the frequency because the DOD owns sub-6 and isn’t letting go.
I could have 5G now with my z4. It accepts “mods,” which stick to the back magnetically. I have a JBL speaker mod on it now, and I carry a spare battery. But I seriously doubt there are many 5G senders in my neck of the desert.
LTE4 seems to do just fine for me.
But I’d love to have that 11+ camera.
I hope it's true that DoD is holding on. DoD gave up part of the L-band under the previous administration. That screwed things up royally for some Army radios.
I’m just going from memory and casual research on this. So take it with a grain of salt.
Your account information and contacts are on the SIM card in the phone. Even with a factory reset that info is still there. The surest way to do a completely fresh restart is to get a new SIM from your provider, or you can do a SIM card reset through the phones options.
If you just pull out the SIM the phone should still work on wifi, just like a little tablet. You can then connect it with a “hotspot” on your new phone and “steal” it’s data connection.

I use Sygic on my Android for maps and navigation. Even the free version allows one state map download for offline use.
I will remove my sim can then. I just want to use it as a miniature surface. Thanks for the advice.

I’m the same way, and the only time I use my Android is when we travel, because travel apps are convenient. Otherwise, my SIM card lives in my BlackBerry using the old BB operating system. That will end next year when Verizon goes 5G.
It worked! Now I can use it just for what I want. Thanks again.
Freeper help ... PING!
I’m sure they will keep 4G well into the future. 5G just is not dependable enough.
Thanks. I’ve seen video of the full version of Windows10 installed on a 950 XL. It can handle it. Maybe someday
I wish that were true, and believe that is the case for most providers. When I call Verizon they’re adamant that my phone no longer will “work” at the end of of 2020 due to 5G conversion. I have found that hard to believe, as the phones being sold this very day are mostly 4G. What are they going to do, make year-old phones obsolete? I don’t think so.
Although my phone clearly says “4G” at the top, they say it’s really 3G. I think they just want to sell new phone. (I’m shocked!) :)
Anyhow they’ve been wrong before, and I’m hoping this is one of those times.
I thought about buying a Surface tablet with LTE, but wanted to make sure it wouldn’t become useless in a year, so I wrote to Verizon and asked. They assured me they would be supporting 4G for a long time to come. That’s the only assurance I have.
That’s good news. I’ll take something in writing over a rep’s verbal info. Thanks for the info!
