The Senate was careful to avoid getting a majority convict (51-49) vs. Clinton. It will have no such restraint vs. Trump. It’ll be every man for himself. Collins, Murkowski will vote to convict, they are in DEM majority states or don’t care.

It will quietly die in the house.

Or keep it going until next November.

How do you get evidence into the public domain?

The Senate was the target.

Then they get the “S” word, at which point they take the 5th on national TV— and they get investigated anyway. Right before an election.

A “majority” means nothing. You need 2/3 to convict in the Senate.

Should be interesting to see if Kamala and Mazie can hold to that last one

-- To the lawyer types on here. Is discovery allowed in this trial? --

The senate makes the rules on a case by case basis. Any discovery will be on the Senate's terms. Likewise with putting on the case, and putting on a defense. The Senate can limit all of this by time, or by number of witnesses, or whatever it wants. The process can be just as lopsided as the House. What controls this is the Senate desire to maintain the illusion it is being deliberative, fair, and reaching the right outcome.

It'll be a real show! Under Clinton, leader and minority worked together to set up the trial parameters. Who knows how much McConnell will concede to Schumer. Could be little or nothing, could be everything Schiumer wants, he gets, and McConnell limits the defense as much as he thinks his relelection can stand.

The GOP desperately wants to be returned to minority status. It does not want a return to constitutional government. It is a gloabalist institution, and GOP "principles" are just for show, not for go.

Trump’s fate depends on how weasly McConnel is, if he allows the trial to go forward during Christmas recess then Trump could be convicted, since 2/3 of the quorum, not of all Senators must vote yea, and the Senate has a history of doing underhanded things this time of year ...

I would not guess at the deep state power to blackmail and coheres for votes. First the demoicrat party is dying rotting corps. If house votes to impeach the blowback will kill off the rats is the 2020 election and sealed indictments. If they do not impeach they are still dead form sealed indictments. RINOs will be in big trouble.

If impeachment passes the revolt of we the people will shut down Washington.
The streets of dc would be clogged with freedom riders and riots for months.

-- Not once have I heard any Republican challenge this "BIG LIE." --

It is challeneged in every hearing. It was challenged DIRECTLY, and called out as a big lie, in Monday's shamwow hearing.

Doesn't matter though. The press allows the lie to go on as a fair represntation of reality, and it becomes so in the mind of many people. People are easily misled, and the press is masterful at it. So are the politicians.

-- The judge would throw him out on his donkey. --

Not necessarily. The judge might work with the cop to come up with a pretext the judge can sign off on. Maybe the judge hates the guy too. Small towns work this way, and some big cities do as well. The system is more rotten than most people suspect.

That’s an excellent thought and makes a lot of sense.

Know what I see coming here? If this is not done fairly in the eyes of the people.

I see a very bad violent reaction coming.

Understood. But if a majority of the senate votes to convict, then there is bipartisan agreement, and majority agreement, that Trump is unfit. The press will beat the "majority" drum hard.

The press will say that 2/3rd rule is bogus, blah blah blah.

My point was that the Senate is mindful of the majority threshold, even though it has no "legal" effect, it has substantial PR effect.

If Lindsey Graham had any balls he would acquit Trump right on the spot
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
But we all know he is lacking in that department.
I wonder if they have any sense of actual -fear-? A sense that they can go too far? They seem very enamored with Ukraine. Do they remember those legislators fleeing the capitol as angry people poured in? Do they remember seeing them later taking some rule changing votes at gunpoint?
Do they believe that somehow that it just -can’t- happen to them?
