PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WJAR) — An 18-foot artificial Christmas tree is aglow at the Rhode State House for the 2019 holiday season.

It’s the first time a fake tree has been used there in recent history.

"For whatever reason, we've gotten into trouble with the fire marshal in the past with the real tree and so many lights, so this year, we just decided to play it safe,” Gov. Gina Raimondo told NBC 10 News shortly after she and her family flipped the switch during a ceremony in the Rotunda on Wednesday night.

"For whatever reason..."? She is the Governor, shouldn't she know?

Is everything controversial now?

This is the least interesting thing I’ve read in a long time.

Modern LED lights are not much of a fire hazard.

This makes it interesting. Perhaps locals know more but in a broader sense, it could be of interest to some here. “It is a very unfortunate decision by the governor to choose a tree made from PVC plastic in a Chinese factory over a real Christmas tree grown by a Rhode Island family farm as the centerpiece of the state capitol’s Christmas celebration,” according to the statement. “It is a poor decision for the environment and unhelpful, at best, to agriculture and small businesses in Rhode Island.”

Nor are properly watered trees that will only be in place for a few weeks - and are in a sprinkler-system-equipped building.

You and I and every other person could drive through CERTAIN areas of every city and identify a dozen buildings that would burn like gasoline-soaked matches in a matter of minutes.

Somehow, some way the fire marshal never gets round to ordering those buildings condemned or cited.

If you don’t have a real dead tree leaking sap on your living room floor, you’re not a real Christian.

Total lame excuse.

Using LED lights would have been way, way, cheaper than buying a big artificial tree.

It's so Greta won't go on Youtube and say, "how dare you".

It has simply made money sense to me, for many years now, to have invested in a very very good quality artificial tree, than the expense of buying a real tree every year, simply to discard it after cursing the mess it made on the floor as well as the mess discarding it.

Let’s not forget the Christmas tree IN THE HOUSE, according to legend, was a custom started by protestants in Germany, spread in Germany and taken to England by King George, where the custom became common, and from there spread around the world by the people of the British Empire. Before that, holiday trees were usually only decorated trees that stood outside, and if it was a tree cut for the occasion it was usually burnt where it stood sometime as part of the seasonal events.

The importance of any thing is not its origins but the symbolic importance you give it. And, it is only symbolic, it has no special meaning on its own. Therefor a Christmas tree is neither intrinsically good or bad. It’s up to you what it symbolizes and why.

Honestly if the fake tree looks nice and costs less money, then so what?

Not like millions of people dont use them.

I don’t see the problem. Fake trees usually don’t come equipped with bird nests, spiders, insects, sap, and loose needles like real trees do. Plus, they may cost more than a real tree on an individual basis, but the fact they can be used for several years makes them more cost effective in the long run.

I don't know what the big fuss is about either.

My wife and I stopped buying real Christmas trees 30+ years ago. Since then we've had two artificial trees. The current one has lasted over 20 years and is still in great shape. The pre-strung lights quit working 5 years ago or so We just cut them out of the tree and put up new strings of lights.

It's an 8 ft tree (our ceilings are 9 ft.) and that big of a tree became too expensive to buy every year just to throw them out after the holiday. Helped our Christmas budget too.

All of the environmental wackos should be pleased that some people don't cut down real trees every year to use for 2 or 3 weeks at most. But then the wackos are usually radical Leftists and don't believe in or celebrate Christmas anyway. 😂

Surprised the atheists aren’t complaining about the tree and associated traditions.

Real Christmas trees are dying out simply because of the mess they cause.
