Teens from some of China's wealthiest regions are outperforming their peers in the world's richest countries in reading, math and science, according to new results from a global education study.
The survey found that 15-year-old students from Beijing, Shanghai, and the eastern provinces of Jiangsu and Zhejiang ranked top for all three core subjects, achieving the highest level 4 rating.
Students from the United States were ranked level 3 for reading and science, and level 2 for math, while teens from Britain scored a level 3 ranking in all three categories.
The findings are part of the 2018 Program International Student Assessment (PISA) -- a global yardstick of education systems taken every three years by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), a grouping of the world's richest economies.
Singapore took top spot in the 2015 survey and placed second this year, though the difference in its score compared to the four regions of China was not considered "statistically significantly different," according to the study.
China's success in the survey is likely to come under question due to the fact that only four of the country's wealthiest areas were surveyed -- meaning that the results don't accurately represent the tens of millions of students living in other parts of the country, especially rural areas.
In 2012, PISA's results were heavily criticized for only including students in Shanghai as the sole representative of mainland China, a country of more than a billion people.
The next survey in 2015 was broadened to include four provinces and cities -- Shanghai, Beijing, Jiangsu and Guangdong. China still performed well that year, but its scores were down across the board compared to the previous survey, when only Shanghai students were surveyed.

The Chinese are rating higher mostly because they are cheating.
Asians in general lack creativity but they have a certain problem-solving approach.
When doing a test they are learning to do a test perfectly, it is not an exercise in intelligence for them.
I also can’t take seriously any rating putting Ireland and Australia heavily above Czech Republic and Israel in intelligence.
It is not that I am thinking Irish and Australians are stupid but let’s get real.
“” “” I worked at a mine in Indonesia. The Americans said the Indonesian engineers were very book smart and could recite the equation from memory. But they didnt have the problem-solving ability to use them in the real world. The one American called them automotons or something.”” “”
That’s an advantage of Americans. Most American professionals you see in most trades are ‘book stupid’ but very good at the trade they are doing.
That’s a specific problem-solving approach. Others tend to spread attention and aren’t really good at anything yet they think they are smart and the Americans stupid.
Their charges has some logic to it but what is important is who are more effective as a result and it is not them.
China does awful poor in Science.
Is global warming real?
Are electric cars superior?
Is wind power better than oil?
Should organs be harvested?
China students are real ignorant dopes !
Do not believe the “tests”.
Chinese do well in tests? see the book about the Asian Tiger mothers.
We have them too here in the Philippines. You are poor, or your parents were poor, so you pressure your kid to study all the time and do well.
and you have to remember that there are a lot more Chinese than Americans (one billion). So even if percentage wise there are fewer smart Chinese, the actual numbers are higher.
I have worked and lived a lot in poor countries, and a lot of third world “stupidity” is from early childhood malnutrition. So people are indeed getting smarter.
the bad news? Pollution lowers IQ. China is very polluted, so they might see a problem in the future.
American kids tend to have less “knowledge” than European students, but because they are free to think and contradict their teachers, they tend to be more creative. I don't know if the present day PC culture has changed this (the studies were done when I had kids in school in the 1990s)
“To them, were so reprehensible, such anathema, that the only satisfactory solution is the same final solution that socialists always resort to: the boxcar trip.”
And so that brings up the $64k question.
What are WE going to do about it? Are we going to meekly get into the cattle cars? So far that’s the direction we’ve been going as we are constantly caving to their demands. And now they have gotten so bold as to state unequivocally that just being white is being evil.
At what point do we rise up and say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH?
