World's 'largest animal sacrifice' starts in Nepal after ban ignored

Hindu worshippers have begun killing thousands of buffalo in what is reputed to be the world’s biggest animal sacrifice, held every five years in a remote corner of Nepal, despite efforts to end the bloodshed.

The Gadhimai festival began in the early hours of Tuesday amid tight security, with the ceremonial slaughter of a goat, rat, chicken, pig and a pigeon. A local shaman then offered blood from five points of his body.

About 200 butchers with sharpened swords and knives then walked into a walled arena bigger than a football field, holding several thousand buffalo, as excited pilgrims climbed trees to catch a glimpse.

“The sacrifices have begun today … We had tried not to support it but people have faith in the tradition and have come here with their offerings,” Birendra Prasad Yadav, from the festival organising committee, told AFP.

‘The Gadhimai festival began in the early hours of Tuesday amid tight security, with the ceremonial slaughter of a goat, rat, chicken, pig and a pigeon’.

If Kamala Harris wanted some revenge on Gabbard in the next debate (presuming that they are even in the next debate) she would open up with that line from the story and ask Tulsi about being a Hindu.

Just Hindus doing what the Hindu.

Perhaps all that buffalo meat can be cured and served at the New Delhi.

(In olden days this would be the place for the Bombay pun, but that is no longer available.)

(Ditto the Ceylon pun here.)

Different animal, different country, different sect.

Sounds like fun. Why don’t American Hindus do this?

I’d love to see the PETA strokes and heart attacks.

Hindus could sacrifice the wolves being deliberately put in the country and do us some good.

As long as the meat isn’t wasted and is processed for food...I have no issue with this particular practice. Except for the rats and pigeons.

I thought cows were “sacred” over there?

“Hindus could sacrifice the wolves ...”

Hindus could sacrifice the leftists, socialists and commies...

Much better.

...Cow becomes national animal of Nepal
...we have made cow our national animal. Now, the animal has constitutional protection and cow slaughter has also been banned

Now what actually happens at this sacrifice? In most the animal is killed and then they have a bbq party. They are very practical about it.

But note in this case, some of the sacrificed animals are rats. That works also for pest control?

In South India, the cows and buffalo walk around as if they own the place. There are temples every couple of hundred meters on the roads, and many statues too.

Everything in Nepal is eaten.

So all you have is non-professional butchery.

But note, the heads of the animals are decapitated in one whack of the Kukri knife or sword. So there is hardly a worsening of the slaughter for meat.

Vegans can continue to howl. If you eat a burger, you are just as complicit.

“I believe in the goddess. My mother had asked her for the good health of my son,”

That son would be in better health if he was able to eat from those sacrifices. The people there are starving because they're idiots who pollute their water and kill animals for a goddess who doesn't need nourishment because, well, she's (a most) a god.

the goddess Gadhimai appeared to a prisoner in a dream and asked him to establish a temple to her.

Yeah, yeah, it's the old story of an inmate scamming the parole board with anything that'll get him out of prison sooner.

Any religion that requires the death of any living thing is just a sickness.

I have difficulty understanding God's reasoning when he gave me the sensitivity to cherish all living things and then, made it necessary that something must die everytime I eat.
