French cooking is truely good! (It can also be very time consuming.)

“Mornay is made by adding grated cheese to a béchamel.”
(and a pinch of nutmeg!)

Was your Officer’s mess that good? (I understand that steak night becomes “We ran out!” night which becomes “Here’s your hot dog!” night, but that may be more an enlisted man thing.)

Yes it was. The Chief MS and the MS2 that cooked for the wardroom were both Filipino and absolutely first rate as chefs. I was the wardroom mess treasurer as a collateral duty for six months after I reported aboard. I managed to get lost with those two half way up Mt. Etna on Sicily. I was driving for a supply run because I had the money and an International driver's license. Between the three of us we spoke five languages, none of which were Italian. We were a little late getting back to the ship.

Our wardroom was absolutely gaga over ice cream. So what did we do? We had a soft-serve ice cream machine installed on mess decks for the enlisted. The wardroom mess purchased mix to replace what we drew off.
