Not only that, respondents’ answers are likely to be inaccurate, either because of unreliable memory or flat out lying to themselves. I have girlfriends who are 60+ pounds overweight, and more, who call themselves “chubby.”

1980’s I recall:

Not wanting to be or look fat.
No gaming for hours on end all the time. More sleep.
Out with the guys doing whatever regularly - biking, playing ball, skiing, golfing, swimming, camping.
No cable running programs all night. More sleep.
Out with gals often - dancing, walks, biking, swimming, yeah partying.
Not nearly the caffeine. More sleep.

Being entertained required moving around back then. Not so much today.

That one meme about having a great union job irritates me because unions don’t hire anybody. Nobody has a “union job”. They have jobs where they are (willingly or otherwise) also in a union. For all we know, Old Economy Steve lost his “great union job” because the union went on strike and caused the plant to close. Thanks union.

Yep restaruants tend to have large portions.

Almost every time I eat out, I take leftovers home. The portions are much bigger than we would serve at home.

I wonder how many people in a restaurant, eat everything placed in front of them, vs. taking any home.

I wonder if some feel they should eat everything placed in front of them, and eat whether they are getting full or not.

I change the oil on my jalopies. My 16 Tacoma I don’t.

That caught my attention, too. I graduated in 1979 and was smacked in the nose with the Carter economy.

I have had to use a cart in the past and likely didn’t look disabled. I had a stress fracture of my foot and didn’t know it . Once “the boot” was on, I definitely looked handicapped.

By the way,...I had a full recovery.

I was thinking along those lines. For the most part, we still had real food available to us in the 80s.

We had real food and women had natural curves.

Yep... I was in my 20’s too. I turned 30 in 1989. Interesting... I weigh very close to the same weight I did then.... except it is all in one spot now...

I disagree. Through brute will power for more than a decade I maintained a normal BMI.

What was life like? Answer:Daily, minute by minute Hunger **Hell**!

For more than a year, I have been on keto. NO more hunger! I eat as much as I want. I feel like I have been released from the The Hunger Hell Prison.

No more swelling in the ankles, blood pressure is back to normal, A1c is normal, blood studies all within normal.....and....exercise is finally enjoyable.

Back when I was starting out in the workforce (late 70s/Early 80’s) I had grandparents who retired to Florida.

One thing I specifically remember was literally every couple in their community had one of those 3 wheeled bikes (trikes?) with the little basket on the back. They’d use those to visit other areas in the park or hit a local business if not too far.

Now I almost NEVER see them. Everybody had a motorized cart or a damn Golf Cart.

Creeping inactivity even among the older set...

I actually did finally read the article. Interesting. I think maybe the “fast food meal” was lower in calories back then and that people didn’t finish them always... the gut biome might have been better back then as well, less pesticides maybe, better soil? More fat in the diet? Interesting.
