European lawmakers have voted to declare an EU-wide climate emergency, in a symbolic move aimed at increasing pressure on the incoming European Commission to take a stronger stance on climate change.
The climate declaration was passed on Thursday in Strasbourg during a European Parliament (EP) debate on the upcoming United Nations COP25 climate summit that kicks off December 2 in Madrid.
In a statement on Twitter after the vote, EU lawmakers urged the European Commission to fully ensure all relevant legislative and budgetary proposals are fully aligned with the 1.5-degree-Celsius target limit on global warming.
The resolution calls on the EU to cut emissions by 55% by 2030 to become climate neutral by 2050. [ ]
The incoming European Commission president, Ursula von der Leyen, has proposed a European Green Deal that aims to achieve climate neutrality or no added greenhouse gases to the atmosphere beyond what can be absorbed by 2050.

Note to the UK: Brexit faster.
Yes, EU, the climate changes. It has done so since forever.
Treating natural climate variability as an emergency only shows that there are too many politicians with too much time on their hands.
Oh, and CO2 is an essential component of life on earth. Eliminate CO2, eliminate life.
“...in a symbolic move...”
Says it all right there.
EVERYTHING associated with progressives is symbolism over substance.
And EVERYTHING they touch turns to excrement.
The EU is going to legislate the correct Celsius reading?
They’re either more powerful than King Canute when it comes to the sun, or they’re denying science. (Of course, the left denies science all the time, especially when it comes to the human genome dictating what sex a person is.)
Oh, my gosh! Somebody raise taxes!
The crescent moon will fly over Europe before the climate brings any negative effect. But that’s not a problem for eggheads.
So they declare a symbolic “emergency”?
That’s like issuing a winter storm warning in July.
Note to the unelected fascists running the eu: You are such losers. Don’t you tyrant fools know about changing weather...it always does, it always has.
Buncha commies.
More communism will solve GW.
It’s going to be hilarious to watch France and Belgium and all the other Eurowienies as their economies crash into these iceberg policies and the United States continues to distance ourselves from them.
Buy lots of popcorn.
“European lawmakers have voted to declare an EU-wide climate emergency, in a symbolic move aimed at increasing pressure on the incoming European Commission to take a stronger stance on climate change.”
They might as well have said: Stop The World We Want to Get Off.
I say let’s help them migrate off planet.
If it were such an emergency, they’d stop exhaling CO2 immediately.
“European lawmakers have voted to declare an EU-wide climate emergency, in a symbolic move”
EU is REALLY good at “symbolic moves”, always have been, but not so good at “actual moves”, like all the world wars they would have lost without U.S. intervention, and then of course there’s France ...
“European lawmakers have voted to declare an EU-wide climate emergency, in a symbolic move”
actually, when you think about it, it must not be much of an “emergency” if the only move one makes to deal with the supposed “emergency” is “symbolic” ...
Their entire union is collapsing under the weight of cultural invasion so let’s worry about something that is nothing.
Key word: symbolic
Germany intends to ban the sale of all gas and diesel fueled vehicles by 2030, mandating all-electric vehicles thereafter.
The Swiss and others held an energy convention and one of the questions that came up was “Will Germany’s existing electrical grid handle the increased load?”
The Germans replied “What??” Evidently, they never thought of that.
Oh yeah, they plan on shutting down nuclear generation by 2022 and be all renewable by 2038.
I’m reminded of the “What did Californians use before candles” joke, only later on it will be “What did Germans use before horses - automobiles”.
