It is with heavy hearts that we report the passing of Jake Burton Carpenter the founder of Burton Snowboards. He was 65-years-old.
Officials from the company he founded, Burton Snowboards, confirmed his death. He emailed his staff this month saying his testicular cancer had returned.
In an e-mail to employees on Thursday, John Lacy, Burtons co-chief executive officer, wrote: It is with a very heavy heart that I share the news that Jake passed away peacefully last night surrounded by his family and loved ones as a result of complications from recurring cancer.

God Bless Burton for making some of the bestest ever snow gear.
I got tons of his stuff.
RIP
RIP. Out of respect for Mr. Carpenter, Ill hold back on snowboarder jokes , every other time one almost runs into me on my skis, this upcoming season.
Conservative, liberal - dont care. He made something cool and sold it to everyone - having to fight the system in the process (which probably means he was at least libertarian)
I own one of his jackets! I’ll never part with the thing. Super comfy, lightweight and WARM. I found it for a song at a Thrift store, but knew I was getting a many-hundreds of dollars coat for $10.
My son wore it until he outgrew it (and after a snowboarding concussion, he finally gave up the sport - Thank Goodness) and I then snagged it for my own. Great for barn chores and snow shoveling - really cuts the wind.
RIP, Mr. Burton Carpenter. :)
Snowboarding is fine in soft snow.
On hard snow one needs to get some bibs with room for a large butt pillow.
When skiing, choose a ski area with low user density. Plenty-o-room for all to enjoy without physical interaction...

And a good sense of humor.

I remember watching him demo his new gadget in Vermont. I thought it was a pretty cool idea but would prove to be a fad. I the next time I saw him demoing was out at Brighton Utah. Soon after, the resort opened to snowboarders and became a haven. The other resorts soon followed.
Boarders also DO need to carry at least one pole to help get across the flats...
Much like when I go tubing I bring a kayak paddle for improved navigation and maneuverability.
Ive been riding for 20 plus years. When I get stuck on flats I either push with my back leg, un-strap and walk, or have my skier wife tow me - and thats in order from first to last resort. Never have I seen anyone on a snowboard bring a pole along.
I have yet to see another Tuber with a kayak paddle...
I was riding his boards in the mid to late 80s. They were easily the best. I used to ride with Craig Kelly and crew, back when one had to be polite. There was a few hills, like Silver Star in Vernon southern BC that I was the first to put a board to. One had to be an ambassador back then. Now it seems like a lot of punks.
Long before Burton most of the kids in Vermont were using snurfers - with the staples for your feet and a rope in the front. Interesting that the inventor of the snurfer is now in the snowboard hall of fame. I still have my 53 year old snurfer.
How about we skiers who have had to dodge all the stoned boarders for the last couple of decades? Thankfully, we still have Alta.
I’m sure some people ride while stoned. I got into a gondola at Stratton once and had a contact high from all the skiers partaking. Like being trapped in Spicoli’s van.
That said one of my best friends was Jake Burton's first team rider. Before Burton put steel edges on the board. Got fired from his Ski School Director position in Vermont ‘cause he never ride ski's anymore.
You actually think only boarders are stoned?
KevveeB, please stay at alta. Thank you

Yeah, that's the plan.
