Radical pro-abortion activist Elizabeth Banks Charlies Angels reboot was a huge flop over the weekend with the $50 million movie coming in third at the box office and only bringing in a little over $8 million. The reason for the films disastrous opening, according to Banks? Sexism.
Before her abysmal weekend, according to IndieWire, Banks told the Herald Sun (paywall) about the importance of the films financial success to feminism: Look, people have to buy tickets to this movie, too. This movie has to make money, she said. If this movie doesnt make money it reinforces a stereotype in Hollywood that men dont go see women do action movies.
She attributed the success of Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel to them being comic book movies in a male genre. She went on, So even though those are movies about women, they put them in the context of feeding the larger comic book world, so its all about, yes, youre watching a Wonder Woman movie but were setting up three other characters or were setting up Justice League.
By the way, Im happy for those characters to have box office success, she clarified, but we need more womens voices supported with money because thats the power. The power is in the money.
Banks continued her rant about comic book films and women in an interview with the Wall Street Journal (paywall), also ahead of Charlies Angels crash and burn:
Youve had 37 Spider-Man movies and youre not complaining! Banks said. I think women are allowed to have one or two action franchises every 17 years I feel totally fine with that.
Banks added she was interested in launching a big franchise driven by women characters because thats often not the case in Hollywood. Being in a big franchise allows you to have it all, she said. I recognize the same thing, its almost unfair for women. The best roles are usually in small movies, but then you dont make any money. Its okay to want to make money.
On Monday, Banks admitted the movie she directed, produced, wrote, and starred in was a flop but insisted she's still "proud of #CharliesAngels and happy its in the world."
Maybe the film was box office Kryptonite because it stars pansexual weirdo Kristen Stewart and two relatively unknown actresses instead of Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, and Lucy Liu who were at the top of their game in the early 2000s when their Charlies Angels reboot movies came out.
Perhaps the movie failed because it was so overtly pushed as a feminist flick. Previously, Banks, who calls herself a feminist, talked about how she wanted to bring the themes of sorority and sisterhood and camaraderie and women working together as a team into an action movie. That doesnt exactly scream, Box office gold!
She said, I wanted it to be a celebration of women. I wanted it to remind people that women are everywhere, that you cant ignore us and that when you underestimate us, you give us a superpower. Who wants to pay for the privilege of receiving that lecture?
Whatever the reason, one thing is for sure, Banks won't be getting her big feminist Charlie's Angels franchise.
The oroginal Charlies Angels from decades ago was pretty successful
It’s on MeTV weekdays at 5.
I think women are allowed to have one or two action franchises every 17 years I feel totally fine with that.
You go right ahead, Sweetheart. Just don’t get all upset when I don’t pay to go and see that woke garbage.
Big mistake = big flop.
I didn’t even know there was another Charlie’s Angels movie out there.
I hate Banks’ politics, but I did like her in the movie, “Love And Mercy”.
“I wanted [the movie] to remind people that women are everywhere, that you cant ignore us...”
Yes, women are everywhere; men are, too. So what? I’m a woman and I don’t happen to feel that any men need to be “reminded” that there are women around. People go to the movies to be entertained or to escape reality. If you just want to ‘remind” moviegoers that there are various types of people in the world, you could film two hours of people walking along the sidewalks of any major city in the USA. Soon, people watching that movie would be “reminded” that women are everywhere...as are men...and fat people, skinny people, old people, children...white people, black people.
If you expect someone to drive to a movie theater and pay $15, you’re going to have to do more than “remind” them there are women out there. You’re going to have to show them attractive women, women significantly more attractive than 99% of the women who are “everywhere”.
Wasn’t it Sam Goldwyn who said “If you want to send a message, go to Western Union”?
This reminds me of the rollout for the WNBA. It was supposed to be the next big thing, but there was no audience for it, save for mannish lesbians (who also made up the team rosters).
In the movie, do women beat up men? Maybe sane women and men do not want to see such foolishness.
Thats all I watch these days, a lot of ME, INSP, WGN.... anything but Fox. Anything to take me back to the good old days. LOL
Terminator 2 - Linda Hamilton
Indiana Jones - Karen Allen
Star Wars - Carrie Fisher
Aliens - Sigouney Weaver
I've provided enough examples that allow me to correct her statement:
"...men dont go see women do crappy action movies that are remakes of old TV shows."
and
"...women dont go see women do crappy action movies that are remakes of old TV shows."<
You know, "if you want to send a message, go to Western Union!
That is the lesson ALL of Hollywood seems to have forgotten. No wonder they are following network TV down the drain to oblivion.
Well, it will either go two ways. As we expect, it should bomb big time. They’ll either double-down on stupid and give FemiNazi 007 a second film or will quickly recast with a male for the next installment.
Her best role was as the drunken slut in “The 40-Year Old Virgin.”
See. Just need the proper motivation. (So much for Stalinist Sally Field proclaiming women wouldn’t start wars if they held office. Yeah, right. If Prime Minister Merkel insulted Sally’s choice of footwear, Sally would carpetbomb Berlin before midnight).
The North Korean approach to marketing can only produce the cued applause of a party conference.
Or they’ll do like Stalin, to ring a bell to tell everyone they can stop clapping (but still take note of who stopped clapping first)
They need ladies that look like the ladies in the 1970’s
Women were better looking back then : )
