Someone asked this question on Quora:Is there a flaw to the American school system? Why do so many teens have depression? Why dont people do anything about it?
My answer: Okay, lets suppose youre a ninth-grade student in the school system. What are some reasons you might feel anxious and depressed?
First, you sense from the early grades nothing very serious is going on in your school. People never really learn to read. They dont know any geography, any history, any science. Many students can hardly add and subtract. People sometimes think that taking it easy is a good idea. Yes, maybe for a week or two. But if you feel that your whole school year is a waste of time, youre not going to be happy.
Second, the school is unnecessarily violent and chaotic. Kids hurt each other, they hurt teachers, they do what they want, at least some of them do. You know youre in danger. You know you have to be careful not to offend students who are known to be dangerous.
Third, the teachers and administrators tell you continuously that there are many genders. Youre encouraged to wonder which one you are. This is very unsettling. They wont let you be one thing or another.
Fourth, school officials warn you constantly, the world is coming to an end some way or another. Everybody will be dead in a decade or two. Its scary to be reminded of this every day.
Fifth, random drills, with violent cops and guns, can interrupt school life at any time. You never feel really safe. Youre stressed out all the time. Whats the point of living like this? Maybe you should just end it, thats what some friends say.
Sixth, almost everybody cheats, on their homework, on their tests, on their essays. Some people say thats why were in school, to learn how to cheat. Thats what you need to get ahead in a bad world.
Seventh, everything is apparently a lie. Everything taught in the school says that things taught somewhere else are lies. Fake news is everywhere. What can you believe?
Eighth, nobody is sure what their grandparents believed but you are sure they were wrong. Their ideas are all silly, about religion, patriotism, honesty is the best policy, be all you can be. Unfortunately you didnt find out the ideas that arent silly. Life feels very empty. Of course youre depressed.
CODA: as for doing something about this, maybe some politicians want to exploit this sadness and depression. The kids are so lost and adrift, they can be persuaded to believe anything.

Increasing marijuana use, which is linked to depression.
Because all their learning about is how to be a good commie..??
Oh, and how to put a condom on a banana, use a hypodermic syringe, use a bong and how guys should really get to like guys...a lot...
Depression means A change needs to be made, ie situation, attitude, morals, etc
Great post, thank you. Everything you said are is true.
I imagine the depression rates are rather high in prisons too.
All I would say is "Take a look around you. Disregarding the Sad Sacks and Gloom Merchants in the media, how bad is your world really? You're being played, suckers. The naysayers can't "fix" anything unless they can convince you it's broken."
There is so much depression in the public schools because first of all:
Being 13 to 19 you are, in my opinion, naturally nervous, anxious, unsure, sensitive, SCARED AND MOSTLY A NERVOUS WRECK.
I don’t know why but it is in the DNA or something.
Add to this the crazy, feeling of power of some shaky teachers who think nothing of manipulating young vulnerable people. If the teachers had some common sense, they would recognize the state of mind of the students and try to teach them how to cope with their issues.
I was all of those things in my teens, and I had a wonderful childhood. I can imagine how that affects some who do NOT have benefit of great parents.
They know the point of school is to socialize, not to learn. There is no direction offered, and if there were at this point, none would be taken.
I disagee. Depression is a specific thing. I know because I suffered from it for over 40+ years. I compliantly took meds that barely worked if ever for 25 years.
I ended my suffering by eliminating sugar, carbs & plants from my diet last year. 24 days into the experience I lost the depression symptoms & they have not returned.
You can make a young brain insulin resistant if you feed it enough sugar. Sugar damages the mitochondria in humans in addition to the insulin resistance. Pancreas & gut bacteria keep sending messages to the brain “MORE SUGAR!” Starve a young brain of energy & depression, anxiety & worse join the party.
Democraps run it thanks to worthless Republicants that could care less! Like everything they run, they turn it into sh1t, and it’s followers into sh1theads. In my day, we had the attitude that teachers were just that, teachers. Now they are all controlling overlords who can’t be questioned who rule over atomatons that can’t think for themselves!
The death knell for US public education began in 1971 with the practice of forced busing to achieve racial integration.
This is very simple- iPhones and social media and
since theres no question about it
Im hanging up on myself
Without Christ, no hope.Kids have sense enough to spot the phoniness in the teachers, not enough to overcome it.
Sadly, you’re right.
Adult male white authority? What the hell is that?
Most of the men in this country are white.
Generally most POLICE are white.
"Adult male white authority" would be a white male police officer.
Young non-white men have to learn to deal with them.
I sure as heck didn't make that up.
Those "single parent households" usually tend to be female. So who is there to teach the boys AND girls how to deal with the male part of life?
Giving more and more government money for additional children, legitimate or not, perpetuates the problem.
I say NO MONEY. The young baby producers will STOP having the babies if they don't get more money.
