CLEVELAND, Ohio -- If there is anything we learned from the fiasco that was Colin Kaepernicks workout Saturday is that it was more about appearances than it was ever about football.
For the league, the original, hastily organized, workout seemed to be about protecting itself from a potential second collusion lawsuit than giving Kaepernick another chance to play in the NFL. Otherwise, they wouldnt have put media restrictions on it or presented him with an unusual waiver to sign just hours before.
For Kaepernick, the workout, which was scrapped and moved at the last minute to a high school 60 miles away, appeared to be more concerned with calling the NFL on its bluff and sticking it to the owners, while, at the same time, bringing more attention to his social-justice cause which, apparently, now includes himself.
Each side had its own self-serving motive to go along with this charade. If it was ever about how deep Kaepernick could still throw the ball, any NFL team -- including the eight that followed the workout to the high school -- could have had him in for a tryout on any Tuesday during the season the last three years.
Still, if Kaepernick, NFL scouts or a teams fanbase clamoring for a quarterback genuinely thought his performance Saturday would result in a job Monday, the plan backfired, at least according to the talking heads on ESPN and elsewhere.
Does Colin Kaepernick really want to play football?, ESPNs Mike Golic said on Mondays edition of Golic and Wingo.
As much as everybodys applauding you for taking over the narrative, you cost yourself. If your goal was to play football, in my opinion, you cost yourself by not performing in front of 25 teams, the Cleveland native said.
Congratulations, you controlled the narrative and then you basically said the NFL should stop running scared afterward. And I dont think there is a team out there that is going to bring you in and sign you, Golic said.
Later, on Get Up, former Jets head coach Rex Ryan said Kaepernick would be a too much of distraction in the locker room.
The NFL doesnt have to have this kid play. Im sorry, he said. As a coach, you dont want this circus in the locker room. And, Im sorry, but thats what it is. Is it going to be worth all the extra media? Youre going to have a backup quarterback having press conferences.
First Take host Stephen A. Smith posted over the weekend on Twitter that he thought Kaepernick was more interested in being a martyr than an NFL quarterback. He also appeared on Get Up, saying Kaepernick canceling the NFL workout at the last minute in favor of his own an hour away was clearly orchestrated.
It reeks of a PR stunt, a PR campaign, the kind youve accused the NFL of doing, Smith said. I want him in the league. I think whats happened to him is unfair. But the manner in which he has handled this, if an NFL team never called him again, what can we say?
On FS1′s Undisputed, Shannon Sharpe, who has been a big supporter of Kaepernicks, said the quarterback blew his last chance to play in the NFL.
You can showcase your talent for the media all you want to, you can try to appease your fanbase all you want to. But they will play no role in you getting a job, he said. Kap, you show up to a job interview with a Kunta Kinte shirt? Youre trying to antagonize... I get it, Kap keeping it real. Kap gonna keep it real and keep being unemployed.
He doesn’t want to play in the NFL, he wants to be a race pimp in the racism industry.
The morning radio guys (one who does sports) maintains that hes better than many of the second-string QBs out there now, but not good enough to be a starter especially after the years off hes had. And he killed any chance at a comeback with this little stunt of his. Someone might have approached him (emphasis on might) despite how toxic he is If here really that hard up right now, but he blew it.
He doesnt want a job. He wants a cause. Its worth more and will last longer.
Yep, and at some point the NFL will man up and stop letting Kaepernick continue to beat them up over their lunch money.
This was a publicity stunt through and through and it could not have happened unless the NFL allowed itself to be pulled around through the nose. The tail wagging the dog.
Like I said the other day - if he actually signs a contract with a team, he has to immediately shut up. And that would put Kaepernick & Co., Agent Provocateurs out of business immediately. :)
His shirt said it all,” Look at me I’m a Kunta.”
Yes, but in the minds of his Black Live Matter supporters, the players run the NFL - and the owners are just a bunch of "racist white dudes" who manage the paperwork and don't get it. Look at the withering criticism Stephen A. Smith got on Twitter for pointing out the obvious - Kaepernick doesn't want to play - he wants to keep the profitable controversy alive.
Wow.
To be honest I don’t even know what a good starting quarterback gets these days.
But he was neither towards the end
He might be able to handle a job as a hot dog vendor throwing hot dogs up into the stands but not sure that would work out if he kneels all the time.
I watched the owner of the Cubs try selling hot dogs on Undercover Boss. It was a very tough sale. So he threw the remaining hot dogs in the trash and paid for them himself. When he was caught, he actually lied about it. Kap wouldn’t probably fail selling hot dogs, too.
His real problem is that he’s soft and can’t take a hit. Rest is Kabuki. I do thank him for freeing up my life, there are so many things to do now instead of watching football.
*would probably fail
NFL teams will put up with a lot of PR heat if the payoff on the field is worth it. Ray Lewis proved that. He killed a guy in the off-season, then led his team to a Super Bowl the following year.
The potential for locker room drama alone will keep him unemployed. Who needs more trouble?
ROTFL!
He could be a mascot, if there was a pro team called the Clowns.
