ORLEANS On a sunny fall day, Kristian Sexton was sitting on Nauset Beach, hunched over a small hand-held monitor, his head buried in a sun shade. Offshore, feeding humpback whales were breaching, but closer to the beach, Sexton was tracking three great white sharks with a drone .snip
Its definitely a promising technology, not a perfect (shark detection) technology, nothing is, but in the right conditions you can see very well, he said. Sexton is critical of the assessment of shark mitigation technologies by the Woods Hole Group ...snip
In an email response to an interview request, Woods Hole Group spokesman Adam Finkle said his company and its clients would be addressing questions and comments after the end of the Dec. 16 public comment period...snip
On a sandy bottom, I very easily spotted them. I could fly away, come back in a half hour and fly right back to where theyll be, said plane pilot George Breen, who was a shark spotter for state shark researcher Gregory Skomal for years and now finds sharks for charter vessels running great white shark tours. Every day I flew this summer, I saw them, he said. ... snip
Spotter planes also routinely fly at 1,000 feet, not the 500-foot level in the Robbins study. Height is your friend, said spotter pilot Wayne Davis.

“You can see any public meetings to address the seal shark issue is going to be very contentious. - Tom “
Bottom line: Animals take precedent over people.
TRUE - Also, some of the BEST tasting creatures that you can take from saltwater are DOGFISH & BONNETHEAD sharks.
(On the TX coast, we “locals” call Bonnetheads, “Tourist Trout”, as the tourists get ANGRY & often CURSE loudly when they catch one on an expensive live bait-shrimp, throw them back & never learn that they are GREAT eating & have NO bones.)
Marinated in Italian dressing for 2-4 hours in a plastic bag, seared on both sides & then “finished to the desired doneness” (I do my Bonnethead steaks MED RARE.) over live coals being MY favorite style.

Mucho thanks! And you are making me hungry. I wish I had right now a dog fish I threw back in....to cook of course.
Believe it or not the canned salmon at Aldis is very good. I eat one can a week/
No doubt that attitude plays into the discussion big time here in Mass.
Some of the Cape Towns stopped having public input because the meetings got so hot and heavy.- Tom

Lol, that says it all right there.
I just cannot feel sorry for you, as you remain in DY-land, i.e., “TAXATUECETTS”.
I cannot imagine that a Great White would eat a TAXATUECETTS native, as they are known to often be BITTER bigots/haters & are often infected with chronic Trump Derangement Syndrome.
(Tigers, otoh, will eat DYs, as they’ll try to eat ANYTHING.)
We once caught/tagged/released an > 10-foot Tiger on the long-line about a KM off Rockport, TX that “spit up” an old CAR BATTERY, when we had her alongside. = CHUCKLE.

Some fish like Striped Bass realize if it is the water and it is moving, regardless of its shape, it is edible.
So stripers eat crabs, lobster, eels, squid, mackerel etc that are all differently shaped.
Tiger sharks seem to operate on the premise if it is in the ocean and swallowable it is worth trying. - Tom
100% CORRECT, imo.
I did NOT see it but I’m told that a HUGE Tiger was netted off Biloxi, MS that “spit up” a whole ROLL of TARPAPER onto the deck, when she was brought aboard.= Their digestive system operates equally well in both directions.
(Btw, ALL of the BIG Tigers & GW are females.= The males are nearly always shorter & thinner in profile BUT equally dangerous as predators.)

Wrapping Up a Successful Season
The research team was able to get out on the water two days in November and were successful in tagging white sharks on both days, bringing the total number of white sharks tagged by Greg Skomal of the MA DMF, working with AWSC, to 50 this year!
FIFTY is a LOT. = CONGRADS to the two agencies that are tagging/tracking the GW.
I wonder what percentage of the whole that 50 is?

Sharks occupy a very important position in the food chain.....................The TOP....................
There are several factors that make it really difficult to get an idea of how many white sharks come into our Mass. area.
They are:
The number of tags is limited since it is expensive to get the tags, and fund the tagging operation, which includes boat and spotter plane.
The State (Mass.) is not into funding the white shark tagging, but supplies Dr. Skomal and leaves the expenses of the tagging operation up to the non- profit Atlantic White Shark Conservancy.
The tagging distance is relatively small compared to the Mass. coastline and is limited by the distance the boat can travel.
Right now the massive amount of seals is the main attraction for the sharks, on both sides of Cape Cod, and the seals are spreading out and there are white sharks seen well away from the limited tagging area. The sharks themselves come and go, because unlike us that will eat 2 or 3 times a day every day, eating a seal weekly or every 10 days or so, seems to be sufficient. -Tom
I knew & understand at least most of what you said above BUT still wonder what the total number of Great Whites in the New England area really is.
In theory, there could be 10X as many GW, as have been sighted and/or tagged, counting the visitors.
Yours, TMN78247
There are other factors like a certain amount of White Sharks have been taken (killed) and not reported.-Tom
Do you have ANY knowledge or even have a reason to believe that ANY Great Whites have been killed UNLAWFULLY in let’s say the last 5 years?
I know of NOBODY anyone nor have I even heard rumors of who hunts Great Whites OR is still killing seals in the USA.
Yours, TMN78247
