Aren’t rodents mammals, Jane?
Cervids, I would think. And rodents are mammals.
I think their lives are more like deer than rodents. Those long legs seem unsuitable for burrowing. In fact, they are the smallest hoofed mammals in the world. They are ruminants, and have four-chambered stomachs to ferment tough plant foods like deer or cattle. In other ways, however, they have primitive features, closer to nonruminants such as pigs. They run more like pigs, have teeth more like pigs, and mate more like pigs (no pun intended).
But they are their own kind of animal, and different variations of chevrotains live across Asia and Africa. The water chervotain in Africa stays under water for a long time to avoid predators. Some scientists theorize that whales initially evolved from a similar sort of small deer.
