I wonder if you are familiar with the Johnson Amendment and how it has been used... It has certainly proved effective - rightly or wrongly - to prevent churches from playing the role that they played leading up to the American Revolution.

You are correct Bob. Churches could not have ALWAYS been tax exempt in the first place, because the 501C refers to the section of the IRS code established in 1913. So whatever Churches were before 1913-they were NOT 501c3s. In addition, it is necessary to apply to become a 501c3, and that takes time-it’s not automatic.

And the Johnson Amendment - 1954 IIRC, basically was to prevent the Churches from any political dialogue, and it’s been a huge success for the DERPS.
