Tch, tch! Please, ours is a technical profession, proper terminology at all times! Hollerith or IBM Card unless you were one of the Remington Rand unwashed! Still have nightmares of a spilled box of the same!
“...unless you were one of the Remington Rand unwashed!”
I was one of the IBM unwashed. Started there in 1968, Harrison NY (HQ), also applied to Burroughs, not sure about Remington Rand. LOL
BTW, Started coding for the 1401(auto coder,) then 7010 (auto coder), then 360 (assembler), even wired Unit Record devices.
A diagonal stripe with a felt pen across the side of the stack helped.
My experience with programmers is that they are all artists at heart. To tell them that their software is not working as it was specified is the same as telling an artist you do not like his painting. I have had programmers tell me, “That is the best that I can do.” My “criticism” so crushed them that they could not bear to touch the defiled software again.
Get a grip. Do your job.
“Still have nightmares of a spilled box of the same!”
I have a box with the game “Advent” around here somewhere.
XYZZY
I haven’t seen a Hollerith card in decades!
On cold damp winter days I remember walking across campus with a box of cards. The cards would soak up the moisture in the air and then not fit into the card reader. You then had to let the cards sit for an hour to dry out before they could be read.
Bob Newheart having Herman Holerith explain the punch card concept. I haven't seen this since I was in computer school in 1967. It elevated my esteem of Newheart considerably.
Nine and a half minutes long - as as old punch carder, 4:24 brought back memories.
