I don't think that is exactly true.

People seem to have an internal awareness that they are NOT gods and also that there are powers greater than themselves. Hence all throughout history humans have worshiped something greater than themselves.

I think it is more accurate to say that people want to worship a god (little "g") that gives them permission to do as they please.

Chief among those little "g" gods are (false) deities like Ba'al, Moloch, and, of course, Satan.

Maybe if the so-called “biblical morality” wasn’t so hypocritical and hateful, it would have a better chance?
Maybe stop raping children under the guise of morality (Michele Mottola) ?
Maybe stop advocating for the murder of people you don’t like (Steven Anderson, et al) ?
Maybe stop stealing money from the people who come to you for help (SPAC Nation, London).?
Maybe stop Catholic schools from threatening to out a gay but celibate high school student (Magali Rodriguez ) to her parents, just for being attracted to another girl?

Maybe stop preachers from spitting on and spanking people they don’t like (Thomas R. Meyer)?

Maybe stop preaching from a book that advocates death for picking up sticks on the wrong day, or for selling your daughters as sex slaves?

Maybe then you’ll regain the respect.
