Old Man and the Gun

Posted on 11/09/2019 5:30:13 AM PST by JeanLM

I went to see Robert Redford in "The Old Man and the Gun" for free at the local library. The audience was 80% 70's aged women probably there to see his supposedly last movie. It was in many ways a remake of "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" I had two thoughts: 1. It unnecessarily gave a criminal life a glossy favorable review. 2. It interjected an interracial marriage into the story with the cop who finally catches the "hero" having a black wife. Now I have nothing against black and white marriage, but I know something of its history. Until 1967 interracial marriage was illegal in Texas and other southern states. The cop in the movie was my age and I know a white cop marrying a black women in those days anywhere would have been impossible. I have noticed in TV shows and commercials that mixed race marriage portrayals are common. There appears to be an agenda here. In 2010 in the US only 0.3% of the marriages were between a white man and a black women. In the 60's, when the cop would have been married like I was, the number was near zero. Interestingly there were 8.6% of marriages between a black man and a white woman, a significantly larger number.

Actually, I think TV and movies tend to avoid having black men married to white women because that enflames black women

Almost all the commercials on TV are now featuring interracial couples. Either married or girl and boyfriends......

Good for you. Just goes to show, people should marry and get involved with whomever they choose, regardless of what others say.

Sometimes it’s embarrassing to be a FReeper. Like when I read posts like yours. Isn’t there a racist site you’d be a lot more comfortable with?
Oh, go ahead and castigate me. I couldn’t care less.

What is racist about my post? I stated my aesthetic preference in feminine beauty, and I admittedly generalized about a particular race's physical characteristics. But I believe that the statistics would bear out my characterizations:

Black women, in general, have bigger butts than white women.
Black women, in general, have larger breasts than white women.
The flattened nose is a common phenotype in blacks of both sexes.
Curly (nappy/frizzy) hair is also a common phenotype in blacks of both sexes.

If those statements are borne out by the facts, then they are not racist, they are simply truth. That the truth offends you says more about you than about me.

For what it's worth, if you can refute the assumptions I've made above, then I'll retract my statements and apologize.

You might find these statistics interesting:

In 2013-2014, 36.4% of non-Hispanic whites were considered obese, 7.6% extremely obese.

In that same period, 48.4% of non-Hispanic blacks were obese, and 12.4% extremely so.*

To the degree obesity in women is generally reflected in the size of their hips and their breasts, it is fair to say that where a greater number of women are obese, a proportionally greater number will also have larger butts and breasts. So in fact, my characterizations, general though they are, are correct.

Hi.

“Of course there’s an agenda. And of course Hollywood is distorting history to push it. It’s what they do.”

Of course, but Hollywood calls it “artistic license.”

Butch Cassidy was a classic. So was The Sting. And I guess if you could stand Robert Redford and Jane Fonda, Barefoot in the Park would be watchable, but the more Robert Redford became "Robert Redford" the harder he was to take.

“”Now I have nothing against black and white marriage, but I know something of its history””

I don’t believe that for a minute. I don’t mind saying that I take another look when a mixed race couple appears either in public or in entertainment. I believe it to be true of anyone being raised in the 40’s, 50’s, 60’s etc. I wouldn’t pretend that it didn’t make any difference and then go on to point out the many reasons why it would. It wouldn’t even be necessary for the writer to point out their knowledge of the history of the time. Just because society makes some changes along the way doesn’t mean we all have to pretend we were “there” all along.

Guess I'm thinking about movies. The remake of the Making of Pelham One Two Three ended with Denzel Washington's going home to his black wife. The black wife was less significant than the director's choice to weirdly showcase the wife.

No, maybe we should start one!

Another one is "tenant" when the correct term is "tenet."
