Okay, I get that.

When the Lidl grocery store, a European chain, moved into our market, their billboards said, “Your grocery store is ripping you off!” That annoyed me. I think I’m capable of evaluating my grocery-shopping options based on my personal criteria of price, selection, quality, and convenience, and my decisions are the right ones for me.

To me, their promotion was like they were saying, “You’re stupid!”

We switched to Kerry gold and or anchor almost exclusively a few years back, now plain american butter tastes like cheap crap in comparison

Back in the day, Oleo wasn’t allowed to be called “butter” because it wasn’t butter. Same with this new stuff - it isn’t butter.

I remember hearing those stories as well. The Dairy farmers had a brutally strong lobby and felt literally at war with the margarine producers.

They managed to disallow the “yellowing” of margarine for many years until well after the end of WWII. Significant tax on margarine was also levied for some time IIRC.

Butter is just plants and water processed through a cow factory.

When my dad was a kid it was illegal for manufacturers to color margarine yellow (the dairy lobby, natch.) He remembers that you got a packet of yellow food coloring with the margarine, but you had to mix it in yourself if you wanted it to be yellow.

I’ve been in the meat business in one form or other for more than 40 years. You’re singing to the choir.

No thanks-no processed food for me-that crap is margarine-that unhealthy made-from-processed plant oil crap that does not taste like butter and only lacks a few ingredients to make it a soft plastic or a lubricant like WD40-I’ll keep eating butter-locally made butter when I can get it...

I used to use margarine but have switched back to plain unsalted butter instead.

My 1st hubby and I were both raised on remote ranches in families of all- natural/organic food nuts, so we never ate any processed stuff until we went to college in the city-we soon ditched the dorm/fast food and packaged stuff as unhealthy and went back to all grass fed/organic-especially since by then we had a cub- but still had margarine in the fridge-his mom was at our place one weekend and saw a tub of margarine in the fridge-she scolded us for putting the cub in danger of harm from that stuff, and took the margarine home to feed to the chickens and goats-only butter has been on my table since...

They make a great unsweetened whip cream in a canister, though.

We used to say, “If you think it’s butter, but it’s SNOT, it’s Chiffon.”

We were crude children...

What a remarkable new product but for one thing, it's been around in one form or another since 1869, It's called MARGARINE!

One thing I've noticed in the past few years is that more and more of the fake butter is called "spread" because it has too much water and air mixed in to even be called margarine.

I haven’t bought margarine in at least 35 years. It’s bad for your blood vessels. Unfortunately, I still use vegetable oil. Lard would be a better choice, I know.
