US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will unveil a statue of former US President Ronald Reagan at the US Embassy on Friday, The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday. [ ]
For over 10 years, the United States has wanted to honor Reagan with a statue in Berlin. However, the administration of the capital had till now rejected numerous applications from US officials and dignitaries.
Berliners had mixed reactions to the new statue. One older woman told DW that she was not opposed to a statue of Reagan as the US had been a protecting power over West Germany.
But a man in his 30s told DW he was opposed to the statue. I wouldnt be too happy to connect the fall of the Berlin Wall to Ronald Reagan because he was quite a conservative president, he said. He made the Cold War much more intense than it was before.

I’m guess we shouldn’t expect gratitude from Germans who collectively thought it was a good idea to elect a bitch with a Stasi background as PM. Talk about fumbling on the goal line!
Never forget that Herr Merkle is a born East German.
Germans ought to get on their knees and thank Ronald Reagan they are not speaking Russian.
What does a Kraut in his 30’s know about the Reagan years?
He didn’t live through them or was an infant during Reagan’s second term.
Also, the U.S. Embassy is the equivalent of U.S. territory.
A Reagan statue on the grounds of the U.S. Embassy is none of the German’s business.
And really, Germany should STFU about anything we do.
That “man in his 30s” shows why I could not give one crap that Germans will be a minority in their own country within 20 years. To hell with them, literally.
Germany would almost certainly have gotten the A-bomb, and used it on Russian cities. With a V3 or V4 rocket, possibly against us as well.
Then, for his own reasons, FDR and the communist-controlled state department made the Germans into an additional enemy...
Um...Hitler declared war on us, stupidly. Without that mistake, FDR could not have entered the European conflict.
Kind of hard to do when they declare war on you bub.
When the japs attacked the U.S. we had just one (1) foreign enemy... Then, for his own reasons, FDR and the communist-controlled state department made the Germans into an additional enemy...
See above.
Hitler declared war on US. We did not declare war on Germany until after that.
Bump
Given my observations, appreciation for the military and the related sacrifices falls into two camps:
1) family, friends, and fellow patriots
2) the historical records that outlive the otherwise complacent beneficiaries of the day.
Ah yes. Typical Germans. “He made the Cold War more intense.” You mean he overcame you spineless wimps, got tough with the Commies and broke their backs....even as you called him a “stupid cowboy” and lots of other derisive names and claimed you were oh so much more intelligent and sophisticated and nuanced.
Turns out you were just WRONG and he was RIGHT.
And he won.
And that was a wonderful thing for all humanity.
And now you’re butt-hurt about it.
Without Western intervention, The Nazis would have defeated the Commies. The Nazi state then would have had everything west of the Urals. That would have been a nightmare for generations at the very least.
The time for the US to stay out of European affairs was WWI. There were no Nazis, the Germans were not seeking territorial aggrandizement and were not seeking to take over. They were fighting a defensive war. It was the Russians/French who wanted to upset the apple cart, not the Germans. Had we stayed out of that war, very likely it would have ground to a reasonable negotiated settlement. There would have been no Versailles Treaty and no Hitler (at least politically) and no WWII.
.
Reagan reminds them about the failure of their commie state...
With a Kaiser whose stated goal was to form “a United States of Europe against America”, that was never going to happen.
And remember, Wilson’s re-election slogan was “He Kept Us Out Of War”.
That outlook completely ignores the fact that Nazi Germany declared war on the USA in 1941.
It also ignores the fact that at it’s core, national and international socialism are the same thing.
*its, not it’s. Infernal auto correct.
Two recent threads:
WSJ: Berlin Didnt Want a Reagan Statuebut Its Getting One Anyway
Not much of a difference really. Same cold war but with the Third Reich instead of the USSR. Same same.
Budapest has one but of course they wanted it. Condoleezza Rice went there to unveil it. It’s near the US Embassy in an aptly named Liberty Square.
