Jerry Springer, the former mayor of Cincinnati, Ohio, best known for his crass TV show, has blamed President Donald Trump for Americas so-called lack of civility.
Springer made the comments in a discussion with MSNBC host Stephanie Ruhle over the weekend about whether civil norms are breaking down in the modern era.
I used to joke and say that my anger at the president is that he took my show and brought it to the White House, Springer said. Civility is critical in terms of our norms, and we cant function as a society unless we have norms of how to behave. You cant pass enough laws to take care of every human interaction.
Springer went on to argue that it is Americas leaders, be they government or even economic and religious who are most responsible.
When they misbehave, when they say the norms dont matter, when they say, You can use whatever language you want, anything you can get away with, get away with it. If you dont pay taxes, youre smart. Demeaning other people. When they have this behavior, it tells society that we really dont have any norms anymore.
Ruhle responded by noting the irony that The Jeremy Springer Show became one of the countrys most popular TV shows because of the lack of civility shown among its guests, who were often seen screaming, fighting, and throwing chairs around the studio.

I love irony.
“Pablum puking scum!...”
That’s rich. He puts a bunch of loons together on stage in an environment conducive to fighting each other while the audience cheers, and then he has the nerve to blame Trump for the breakdown of civility! His show is a model of uncivility. He should be ashamed of the garbage values he contributes to our culture.
Wasn’t he once mayor of Cincinnati?
The Trashiest Show on TV...he showed trans on his show before it was accepted, he had pedophiles on, incest loving families...but Trump is the reason for the breakdown of civility. Ok, Jerry...I guess you believe in unicorns, too...
Breakdown of civility is what Springer’s show has always been about. He’s a gutter dweller.
In 1997 and 1998, the show reached its ratings peak, at one point becoming the first talk show in years to beat The Oprah Winfrey Show. It featured almost non-stop fighting between guests5 to 12 per day during one April 1998 weekand religious figures and even other TV personalities complained.Chicago City Council suggested that if the fistfights and chair-throwing were real, then the guests should be arrested for committing acts of violence in the city, as alderman Ed Burke was concerned over the fact that the off-duty Chicago police officers serving as security guards for the program failed to take legal action against fighting guests.
Springer explained that the violence on the program "look[ed] real" to him, also arguing that the fighting on the show "never, ever, ever glamorizes violence". Ultimately, the City Council chose not to pursue the matter. Because of this probe and other external and internal pressures, the fighting was taken off the show temporarily before being allowed again in a less violent nature. In the years of the show having toned down the fights, viewership declined but remained respectable by the newer standards of daytime television ratings.
Yes, he was.
Before becoming mayor, he served on the city council. While a member of the council, Springer enlisted the services of a prostitute and paid her with a personal check. Not the smartest move.
Its amazing that, despite that scandal, he was still elected mayor. What was Cincinnati thinking?
The irony of Springers statement is breathtaking.
I’m getting sort of bad lately at immediately recognizing whether a story is real or from one of the satire sites.
When you have democrat spokespeople, candidates or officials, tell half the nation that they not worthy, in any terms, that is not being civil. You don’t make friends by telling them they are a pile of dung, neither.
What episode is that...’I’m Fat so I married 3 fat ladies, so they won’t be lonely’? Or was it ‘I had sex at Overeaters Anonymous’?
