I admit I was a little hung up on “Why” the Cartel was motivated to do this monstrous deed for no apparent reason. Usually, there is a much more obvious motive and somehow connecting to the victims of their inhumane acts.

Yeah, since this Mormon family had dual citizenship, you would think they would at least get the kids back to the states where they would be safe, since these drug cartels are out of control and very dangerous in that part of Mexico.
