It's the latest trend in affordable housing - renters shelling out $1200 a month to live in communal pods in Los Angeles or San Francisco, where sex is banned and residents brand themselves with matching tattoos.
PodShare, founded in in 2012, provides co-ed bunkbeds in six locations across California which it rents for between $50 and $60 a night, amounting to between $1,000 and $1400 a month.
Everyone gets a bed that turns into a desk, individual power outlets, a locker, a shelf and a personal TV and tenants are known as 'pod-estrians'. The company uses the term 'co-living' for their 50-square-foot-pods.
And such is the power of the pod that some of those living there are now opting to get matching tattoos of the company's logo, giving themselves 'pod number' names like 'Podestrian #3668'.

“..expensive doss house.”
I thought your autocorrect had changed “dog house” which in context would also make sense! LOL.
Never heard of a “doss house” meaning flop house or boarding house.
AFAIK the pod cubicle rent doesn’t include meals, so considering occupants have no space to store groceries, they must buy restaurant food every meal— adding significantly to costs.
Animals... not even a privacy curtain.

Did you ever spend any time in the military?
Thats my apartment! A small, comfortable cubicle. :)
The common kitchen and dining room is separate so everyone eats together.
Wouldnt be surprised if meals are included in the rent. I dont have to buy food and snacks.
$75 twice a month. It’s chump change.
That is smaller than Bruce Willis’ efficiency in “The Fifth Element”, and he was the STAR! (Tongue strictly and firmly planted in cheek!)
As for these pod denizens, hope they wipe their shoes, thoroughly!
When my ancestors came to these shores in the 1630s, the home they built for themselves, the average then was 10’x 10’, was likely larger than this pod.
