It’s a compound found in a lot of oil and gas drilling. There are all kinds of nasty toxic substances found in the media that comes up from oil and gas wells. H2S is one of the worst. Companies use a lot of oversight and caution on production equipment for “Sour” wells.

It’s a by-product of oil drilling/fracking.

When my wife and I used to do Oil Field Gate Guarding and were parked near the drill rig, we had to wear H2S monitors at all times.

We also had regular safety drills for it.

Very Bad Stuff!

It’s used in the tempering of glass.
The most dangerous chemical I ever worked with. Though never had a problem.

Smells like rotten eggs. Chemistry classes use to make it during class, believe it or not. When my group took chemistry, we cancelled that little experiment.

It’s a natural chemical that unfortunately comes with natural gas and crude oil. Smells like rotten eggs.

Hydrogen Sulfide occurs naturally in crude oil and can be produced by sewage decomposing. Above a very low concentration, it will immediately take out a person’s olfactory sense. (If the concentration is high enough it kills your sense of smell almost instantly) At low concentrations it has the rotten egg smell similar to sulfur. Concentrations above IDLH levels it will render a person unconscious in seconds.

Oil Refineries and Sewage Treatment plants are where it is commonly found. The Oil Refineries process the hydrogen sulfide into pure sulfur and sell it.

It is separated from sour Well gas by means of amine absorption. Once separated it is usually converted to elemental sulfur in liquid form, then cooled and solidified for further sale. The process of separating H2S from natural gas is referred to as gas sweetening. H2S is very lethal and has wiped out entire maintenance and operating crews in gas plants and refineries. Very serious stuff.
