Love the scene in Mulholland Falls when Nolte is talking with Bruce Dern, (police chief Parker) wherein he tell Dern that he is sure the army is involved because they blasted a beach cottage with heavy machine guns. Dern tells him it is not a factor because there were many people not far from the police station who had the same weaponry!

I lived in North Hollywood for a brief period in 1977. It wasn’t too bad then, but Mexican gangbangers were moving in from Pacoima and surrounding areas. I was actually shot at by a Mexican gangbanger while I was at work. I moved not long after. I imagine it is just like Tijuana now.

North Hollywood is in the San Fernando Valley, not L.A. The Hollywood to which you refer is in L.A., about 20 minutes by car south of North Hollywood.
The latest update says this was the work of an Armenian gang that was shaking down the grocery store owner; more Wealth of Diversity benefits:-
“LAPD Sgt. Frank Preciado said in a press conference Monday morning that the store’s owner was informed that the suspects had tagged a wall of the building stating that they wanted the money they were attempting to extort from the business.
“According to an LAPD statement, “detectives had been investigating an extortion plot at the location for the past week. Graffiti was discovered on the outside wall of the business that stated ‘Pay me $100,000.00.’”
“While the suspects were on scene, police said that the owner of the store arrived with a firearm and a shootout occurred between the victim and the suspects. The suspects were armed with automatic weapons and possibly a rifle, the sergeant said.
“Law enforcement sources reported that at least one person was shot. The condition of the shooting victim was not immediately known. Authorities initially reported that there were “multiple victims.” It was unclear whether those victims were injured by gunfire.

I’m guessing the sergeant (or the press) meant to say semi-auto weapons; but any ideas on what type of automatic weapon there is and not being a rifle? Flame thrower perhaps? Gatling gun - except that might be considered a rifle. Automatic shotgun???
Despite the media’s usual habit of getting gun stories wrong, I wouldn’t rule out an Armenian gang in LA having access to full auto weapons or anything else that’s for sale in Russia or Iran.
