Sounds like part of the Northern Taurid swarm - the remains of a 100 mile diameter comet broken up long ago, but also, with the Southern swarm, believed responsible for the strike in 10,800 BC which incinerated the North American continent killing off the mega fauna and Clovis peoples and brought on the Younger Dryas.
WAY back in the day; I was able to actually hike down inside of Meteor Crater in Arizona.
Since that time, I have heard that a tourist woman hurt her foot/leg/whatever while attempting to hike down. In high heels!
Then came the lawyers; now there is no access.
