I believe with advances in genetic engineering and like some enviro whacko(s) will produce a pandemic disease and release it; 12 Monkeys scenario. There's a documentary on Netflix "Unnatural Selection" where a GED educated guy in Mississippi is using CRISPR in his garage to genetically edit some dogs he is breeding. Apparently obtaining the tools necessary to make any genetic modifications desired is not too hard.

Its fiction. Every refrigerator has a crisper and no one can use it for genetic engineering. mutant strains of mold and bacteria that would occur randomly cant be called engineered.
